PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's outdoor track and field team prepares to defend its Colonial Relay crown as the two-time defending champion Scarlet Knights travel to Williamsburg, Virginia for the event this weekend at Zable Stadium.
Rutgers, who last season picked up nine ECAC qualifying marks and six event victories, were the first team to repeat as champions in the history of the Colonial Relays.
The 2015 version marks the 50th anniversary of the Colonial Relays and will feature over 2,100 athletes including 58 collegiate women's teams along with 21 club squads.
RECAPPING 2014 COLONIAL RELAYS
The Scarlet Knights not only captured the Colonial Relay title for a second consecutive season but also set two meet records.
The sprint medley relay team, which included senior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) and sophomore Nichole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.) registered not only a new school record, but a new Colonial Relay and Zable Stadium record in a time of 3:53.42 for first place. They bested the previous mark of 3:53.6 set by Seton Hall in 1994.
RU's 4x200m relay team also set a new Colonial Relay and Zable Stadium benchmark. The team that featured current junior Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Farquharson clocked in a first place performance at 1:37.14, surpassing the previous time of 1:37.32 set by Seton Hall back in 1996.
Additionally, Rutgers' 4x100m relay team, featuring Farquharson as one of the members of the quartet, logged a time of 45.82.
Senior Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) brought home a title in the 800m. Racing to a time of 2:15.08 in the University Division, Dibernardo clocked in a full second ahead of second place for her best time of the 2014 outdoor campaign.
Farquharson, in addition to her trio of relay appearances, recorded a trio of second place finishes at the meet. Farquharson finished behind teammate Asha Ruth in both the 200m and 400m and was also the runner-up in the long jump. She clocked in at 24.22 in the 200m, a then-personal best and third best time in the RU record book. Farquharson also ran to a time of 54.31 in the 400m. In the long jump, she reached a distance of 5.71m.
Other notable performances by the Scarlet Knights included senior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) collecting a time of 1:02.37 in the 400m hurdles for fourth, as well as sophomore Bryanna Grant (Cranford, N.J.) leaping to 11.75m in the triple jump for fourth.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK:
The Scarlet Knights battled cold temperatures, rain and wind at the Raleigh Relays, but saw freshman Stacey Anning (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) set a PR in the javelin with a fourth place distance of 45.89m (150' 6").
Additionally a pair of Rutgers relay teams placed fifth. The Scarlet Knight 4x200m squad of Imani Beauliere (Union, N.J.), Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.), Oksana Sokolova (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Dibernardo ran to a time of 1:41.18, while the sprint medley relay team consisting of James, Sokolova along with Sabrina Alexander (Millstown, N.J.) and Sarah Robbie (Marlton, N.J.) clocked in with a time of 4:08.07.
