All-Met Honorees

April 20, 2015

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.), senior guard Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.) and junior forward Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) represented Rutgers on the All-Met Division I Team, it was announced on Monday by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

Laney was a first team selection, while Davis and Copper earned second team honors. Laney, who was drafted last Thursday night by the WNBA's Chicago Sky as the 17th overall pick, was an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press and First Team All-BigTen pick by both the coaches and media. She averaged 15.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and ranked 10th nationally in double-doubles. The senior Scarlet Knight turned in 20 double-doubles during the 2014-15 season.

Among her double-double efforts was a 24-point, 24-rebound night against then-No. 6 North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Her 24 rebounds versus the Tar Heels are a Rutgers Athletic Center (RAC) record - men or women - as she surpassed the previous record of 21 held by Women's Basketball Hall of Famer and former WNBA All-Star Sue Wicks set back in 1987 against Penn State. Laney was also two rebounds shy of tying the Rutgers women's basketball single-game record set by Sandy Tupurins with 26 boards against William Paterson on March 1, 1977.

Davis was one of six finalists for Defensive Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and a top 15 finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given to the nation's top point guard. An Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection by the media, she finished the 2014-15 campaign ranked fourth nationally and tops in the Big Ten in both steals and assist/turnover ratio (3.18).

The senior Scarlet Knight became Rutgers' all-time steals leader -- men or women -- with 294 career thefts, while her 105 steals this season put her name third on the single-season leaders list. She also became the only Scarlet Knight to record back-to-back seasons with 100 or more steals.

One of Davis' best performances this season was on Jan. 10 at Penn State, where she tied the single-game school record with 10 steals against the Lady Lions and helped the Scarlet Knights to 22 total thefts, one shy of tying the RU single-game record. Additionally, Davis narrowly missed out on a triple-double as she registered 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists against Iona on Dec. 20. It was Davis' first career double-double and would have been the first RU triple-double since 2011.

Copper, a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree by both the coaches and media and member of the Big Ten All-Academic Team, led the Scarlet Knights in scoring for the second consecutive season. Averaging 16.3 points per game, the junior Scarlet Knight was seventh in the Big Ten in scoring and posted 11 20-plus point scoring performances. She reached double-figure scoring in all but four contests this season and registered 15 games of shooting 50 percent or better from the floor.
