EAST LANSING, Mich. The 2015 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships get underway on Thursday with the three-day event hosted at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Facility.
KEEP AN EYE ON:
Javelin Squad:
Four Scarlet Knights rank among the top six in the Big Ten in the javelin led by junior Thomas Carr (Voorhees, N.J.), the 2013 Big East and 2014 American Athletic Conference champion. Carr finished first in four of the five meets he competed in this season including titles at the Tennessee Challenge, Colonial Relays, Raleigh Relays and USF Bulls Invitational. At the Penn Relays, Carr landed in third in the Championship Division. His throw of 72.78m (238' 9"), a new PR captured at the Tennessee Challenge earlier this month, puts him ninth nationally and fifth in the East Region.
Josh Suttmeier (Pattenburg, N.J.) follows Carr in the Big Ten javelin standings in third. He was the runner-up in the javelin in the College Division of the Penn Relays at a distance of 70.68m (231' 10"), which puts his name ninth in the East Region and 20th nationally.
Another Scarlet Knight follows in the standings with freshman Christopher Mirabelli (Lumberton, N.J.) ranking fourth in the conference. Mirabelli won the Larry Ellis Invitational in mid-April with a throw of 69.84m (229' 2").
Sophomore Matthew Krezmer (Montoursville, Pa.), meanwhile, is sixth in the Big Ten reaching a distance of 66.16m (217' 1") in his runner-up performance at the USF Bulls Invitational.
Joseph Velez - Hammer
Junior Joseph Velez (Providence, R.I.) has broken the Rutgers hammer record three times this season and currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten and 18th in the East Region. Velez last broke the record at the Larry Ellis Invitational with a throw of 64.14m (210' 5") and has also won titles this season at the Colonial Relays and USF Bulls Invitational. No stranger to the Big Ten Championships, he was a Big Ten place winner and two-time NCAA Regional Qualifier at Ohio State.
Jermaine Griffith - 400m
While injury kept sophomore Jermaine Griffith (Hamilton, N.J.) away from the track in the early part of the outdoor season, he returned in the beginning of April and has been running strong entering the championship weekend. Griffith won the 400m at the Larry Ellis Invitational and captured a PR (47.08) in the event in his last appearance at the Tennessee Challenge that ranks him eighth in the Big Ten. He was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that brought home gold watches from its first place performance in the IC4A Division of the Penn Relays. Last season he finished third in the 400m at the American Athletic Conference Championships and was an NCAA Regional Qualifier in both the 400m and 4x400m relay.
Kyle Holder -- 400m Hurdles
Junior Kyle Holder (Randolph, N.J.) was the runner-up at the Tennessee Challenge in the 400m hurdles earlier this month and set a new PR (52.75) as he won the Princeton Invitational title in April. He also opened the outdoor season strong with a runner-up performance at the USF Bulls Invitational.
Emeka Eze -- Long Jump
Junior Emeka Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) was a place winner for the Scarlet Knights at the Big Ten Indoor Championships as he took eighth in the event. Most recently, Eze was the runner-up at the Tennessee Challenge reaching 7.13m (23' 4 ¾"). Last season, Eze parlayed his eighth place performance at the American Athletic Conference Championships into a stellar performance at the IC4A Championships with a second place finish in shattering his personal best by .40m and leaping to 7.65m (25' 1 ¼"). He will also be competing in the triple jump.
4x400m Relay Team
Rutgers' 4x400m relay team captured the IC4A Championship Division title at the Penn Relays with its best time of the season and won the title at the Tennessee Challenge in its last appearance prior to the championships. Running for the Scarlet Knights will be Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, N.J.), Stuart Tweedie (Severna Park, Md.), D'Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jermaine Griffith (Hamilton, N.J).
The Big Ten Network will air tape delay coverage of Sunday's championship events on May 24 at 11 a.m. ET.
