IOWA CITY, Iowa - Rutgers women's golf placed second with a 906 total (308-298-300) total at the Third Annual Diane Thomason Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday at Finkbine Golf Course. Senior co-captain Racquel Zurick (West Trenton, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights, carding a 226 (77-75-74) to finish tied for eighth in the 70-player field to earn all-tournament honors.
RU bettered its position with each round at the 12-team competition. The Scarlet Knights improved from fifth to fourth place after round two before ultimately moving two positions on the final day of the event. It marked the best tournament finish for RU since also finishing second in both the Rutgers Invitational and St. John's Intercollegiate last October.
"After a setting the program low mark of 298 in the afternoon round yesterday, we followed up with a 300 today to set a 54-hole scoring record of 906," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "This tournament was a real team effort, as we had at least two scoring rounds from everyone. Today's effort pushed us ahead of two teams to earn a second place finish. It was great to see them fight throughout the round and step up against tough competition."
It marked the fourth career top 10 finish for Zurick, who had 40 pars and two birdies over the 54 holes.
The Scarlet Knights had four players place among the top 20 in the highly-competitive event. Senior Christina Paulsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) and sophomore co-captain Emily Mills (Colts Neck, N.J.) finished tied for 13th with 228 totals, while sophomore Tatum Jackson (Mountain Brook, Ala.) placed tied for 18th with a 229 (81-72-76). Paulsen (77-77-74) was even on par fives with four birdies, Mills (74-74-80) was plus one on par threes with four birdies and Jackson had a team-best nine birdies.
Freshman Astrid Aneman (Stockholm, Sweden) saved her best round for last and finished tied for 50th with a 239 (80-83-76). She had 31 pars.
Host Iowa claimed the team title, carding a final round 290 (+2) on Sunday to finish with an 888 (298-300-290) total. The team title marked the first for the program since April 11, 2012, when the Hawkeyes posted an 884 to win the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.
