UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Rutgers women's golf placed fourth with a 914 (304-309-301) total at the 39th annual Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday on the Penn State Blue Course. Sophomore co-captain Emily Mills (Colts Neck, N.J.) turned in another strong performance, carding a four-over 220 (73-75-72) to finish third in the 54-player field.
Led by Mills' even par 72 on Sunday, the Scarlet Knights saved their best showing for the final 18 holes in their initial event of the 2015-16 season.
Fellow sophomore Tatum Jackson (Mountain Brook, Ala.) also performed well on the Big Ten course, shooting a 229 (77-78-74) to place 16th on the par 72, 6,355-yard course.
"I was very pleased with our start at Penn State," said head coach Kari Williams. "We ended with our lowest three day total in at least three years, relative to par, and we had two really good tournaments from Emily and Tatum and good rounds from all six players. It is exciting to see the improvements from last year and I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish during the rest of the fall."
Freshman Astrid Aneman (Stockholm, Sweden), competing in her first collegiate event, finished with confidence and tied for 23rd with a 234 (78-81-75).
Seniors Christina Paulsen (Ridgewood, N.J.), Racquel Zurick (West Trenton, N.J.) and Samantha Moyal (Alameda, Calif.) comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Paulsen tied for 29th with a 237 (76-81-80), while both Zurick (79-77-83) and Moyal (80-79-80) tied for 33rd with 239 totals. Moyal competed as an individual.
Host Penn State won the tournament with an 889 (295-293-301), six strokes better than second place Delaware (296-303-296=895). William & Mary finished third with a 903 (296-307-300). RU placed ahead of Towson (915), Youngstown State (931), Albany (947) and Randolph-Macon (1007).
William and Mary's Alex Liu captured individual medalist honors with a four-under 141 (69-72-71) to win the tournament by five strokes.
