BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Rutgers women's cross country team was in action on Saturday at the 43rd annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University. Sophomore Allyson Black was the top Scarlet Knight finisher, while freshman Emma Bergman collected a new PR and senior Kaitlyn Bedard posted a season-best time.
The Paul Short Run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation with nearly 6,000 athletes from 450 college and high schools competing in the 2016 edition. The Scarlet Knights were among 12 teams currently ranked in the top 15 of the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll.
Black was the top Rutgers finisher for a third time this season after having led the Scarlet Knights at last weekend's Griak Invitational in Minnesota, as well as the season opening Penn State Invitational. Black logged a time of 22:18.
Bergman and Bedard both crossed the finish line in 22:24, their best times this season. Bergman surpassed her previous top 6K time of 24.01 set at the Penn State Invitational. Bedard, meanwhile, not only registered a new season best time, but was just short of a new PR. The senior bested her previous top 6K time of the season of 23.48 from the Penn State Invitational and was only .07 seconds shy of her PR of 22.17 set at last season's Paul Short run.
"It was a tough competition and I think our younger runners gained some valuable competitive experiences," said head coach James Robinson. "We have to continue to train harder and see improvement each competitive opportunity."
The Rutgers women's cross country team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 7 as the Scarlet Knights look to defend its Metropolitan Championship title at Van Cortlandt Park.
