Women's X/C Prepares For Big Ten Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's cross country team compete at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Les Bolstad Course in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. The championships will broadcast live on Big Ten Network for the first time in its history.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Scarlet Knights will be making their third Big Ten Championships appearance after joining the conference in 2014.
At last season's championships hosted by Northwestern at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago, Allyson Black led the Scarlet Knights with a 16th place finish as Rutgers placed 14th overall.
Black crossed the finish line in a time of 20:30.6 for a PR and RU's best individual finish at the championships since joining the Big Ten Conference
Alexandra Juzwiak also collected a PR with her finish of 22:30.1. Juzwiak took eight seconds off her previous top time from the 2015 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
A LOOK AT THE FIELD
Three Big Ten teams are currently ranked among the top 30 of the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll. Michigan leads the way at No. 6, followed by No. 9 Penn State and No. 27 Michigan State. Minnesota is also receiving votes in the ballot.
EARLY TASTE OF THE BIG TEN COURSE
The Rutgers women's cross team got an early taste of Big Ten racing as the Scarlet Knights not only raced on the same course being used for the conference championships, but were also able to compete against eight other Big Ten teams on Sept. 24 at the Griak Invitational.
The Scarlet Knights placed 32nd in a field that featured nine nationally ranked squads on the 6K Les Bolstad Course.
No. 30 Portland captured the invitational title with 74 points, followed by No. 9 Michigan State with 127 points and No. 13 Penn State with 147.
Sophomore Allyson Black was RU's top finisher logging a time of 23:29 and was followed by senior Kaitlyn Bedard (24:45) and freshman Emma Bergman (24:54). Also scoring for the Scarlet Knights were freshmen Nadia Saponara (24:57) and Lou Mialhe (25:05).
LAST TIME OUT: METROPOLITAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Rutgers women's cross country team placed third overall with Deanna DiLandro and Alexandra Juzwiak placing in the top 10 at the 2016 Metropolitan Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park on Oct. 8.
Host Fordham won the women's 5K race with 41 points followed by Manhattan in second with 61 points and Rutgers in third with 75.
DiLandro and Juzwiak crossed the finish line in ninth and tenth respectively.
For DiLandro, her time of 19:26.3 was a new PR resetting her previous best of 20:04.9 at last season's Monmouth Invitational. Juzwiak immediately followed posting a finish of 19:27.9.
Also scoring for the Scarlet Knights were freshmen Emma Bergman (19:51.5) and Nadia Saponara (19:56.9) along with senior Kaitlyn Bedard (20:00.00).
ON THE PAUL SHORT COURSE
The Rutgers women's cross country team was in action on Oct. 1 at the 43rd annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University.
The Paul Short Run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation with nearly 6,000 athletes from 450 college and high schools competing in the 2016 edition. The Scarlet Knights were among 12 teams currently ranked in the top 15 of the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll.
Allyson Black was the top Scarlet Knight finisher, while freshman Emma Bergman collected a new PR and senior Kaitlyn Bedard posted a season-best time.
Black was the top Rutgers finisher for a third time this season after having led the Scarlet Knights at last weekend's Griak Invitational in Minnesota, as well as the season opening Penn State Invitational. Black logged a time of 22:18.
Bergman and Bedard both crossed the finish line in 22:24, their best times this season. Bergman surpassed her previous top 6K time of 24.01 set at the Penn State Invitational. Bedard, meanwhile, not only registered a new season best time, but was just short of a new PR. The senior bested her previous top 6K time of the season of 23.48 from the Penn State Invitational and was only .07 seconds shy of her PR of 22.17 set at last season's Paul Short run.
SPIKED SHOE TOP 10
Allyson Black finished among the top 10 at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 10 in State College, Pennsylvania.
The Scarlet Knights raced against three programs featured in the top 30 of the latest USTFCCCA Poll in Penn State, Georgetown and Syracuse, along with West Virginia, who was receiving votes.
Rutgers placed sixth overall while host No. 13 Penn State won the invitational title for the fifth-straight season. No. 19 Georgetown took second, while No. 15 Syracuse captured third.
Black, a Denville, New Jersey native, crossed the finish line with a ninth place performance, logging a time of 21:25 to lead Rutgers.
LOOKING BACK AT THE MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL
Allyson Black earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors along with former teammate Paige Senatore held at the West Windsor Fields in Princeton, New Jersey on Nov. 13. The Scarlet Knights finished 15th overall.
Black took 18th place with her finish line time of 21:26.8.
Also contributing to the Scarlet Knight scoring were current Scarlet Knights Alexandra Juzwiak with her time of 23:07.9, Kaitlyn Bedard with a finish time of 23:26.6 and Genevieve Cickavage with a time of 24:32.5.
IN THE CLASSROOM
The Rutgers women's cross country team was recognized for its efforts in the classroom as the Scarlet Knights were named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for the 2015 season.
The Scarlet Knights were among the 208 women's programs that earned All-Academic Team honors in boasting a 3.413 team grade point average. Rutgers had the fourth highest team GPA among the Big Ten.
To qualify for the honor, teams must carry at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Back in December, Rutgers had nine Scarlet Knights named to the Big Ten All-Academic Team for earning a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher with two or more years in residence.
Additionally, nine members of last year's team were among the 83 Scarlet Knights recognized by the Big Ten Conference earning Fall 2015 Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Senior Kaitlyn Bedard earned the honor for the second consecutive year.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
