Women's Basketball Topped By St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - Rutgers, playing in its fourth game in the last seven days, returned to the road on Wednesday and was topped by St. John's 65-39 at Carnesecca Arena.

Junior Kandiss Barber, who has been the top Scarlet Knight scorer in four of the last five contests, led Rutgers with 11 points on the night. Newcomers Jordan Wallace and Jazlynd Rollins followed with eight and seven points respectively from off the bench.

The Scarlet Knights (2-8), who outrebounded the Red Storm 41-36, saw sophomore Desiree Keeling haul in nine boards, while Wallace grabbed a season-high nine.

Akina Wellere paced the Red Storm (5-3) with a game-high 19 points, including a 6-of-7 performance from beyond the arc.

SJU took control of the game with hot three-point shooting and accuracy from the free throw line. While Khadaizha Sanders opened the scoring seconds into the contest with a three-pointer for Rutgers, the Red Storm sunk three-straight from long range to push its lead to 11-3.

From there, St. John's went on to lead by as many as 19 by the end of the first quarter.

Although the Scarlet Knights struggled to get their offensive gears running, RU managed to limit the Red Storm's success from the field in the second half. After going 9-for-13 in the first quarter, St. John's was only 2-of-14 in the second stanza and held the first 5:55 without a field goal. After the drought, however, St. John's rattled off seven answered points and held a 42-17 advantage at the intermission.

It was a low scoring second half with the Red Storm only managing to outscore the Scarlet Knights 22-23 over the third and fourth quarters.

The third quarter saw with the teams trading points throughout the stanza and Rollins contribute five of her seven points.

Rutgers went on to outscore the Red Storm 11-8 in the final frame.
