BOCA RATON, FLA. (MARCH 13, 2016) - Rutgers softball registered a 6-0 shutout of Massachusetts to close its weekend at FAU's Parents' Weekend Tournament. Junior Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.) registered a complete game shutout.
RU improved to an overall record of 9-14 on the season, while UMass fell to a mark of 5-13 overall.
Senior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and junior Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) registered three hits each to lead the Scarlet Knights. Huang registered her first triple of the season as one of three hits to tie her career best.Todd also reset her career high with three hits in the win.
Taylor Carbone suffered the loss for the Minutewomen, while Erin Stacevicz and Kaycee Carbone led the hitters with two hits each.
Despite back-to-back hits for Huang and Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) to start the game, Rutgers stranded the runners on in the top of the first. Sweeney backed up the offense, retiring the first UMass batter at the plate as RU quickly closed the frame with a double play.
The Scarlet Knight bats stayed hot as Todd and freshman Nicolette Anico (Liberty County, Fla.) registered consecutive hits in the top of the second. Huang added her second hit of the game, scoring Todd to give RU a 1-0 edge. Anico then extended the advantage to 2-0 by stealing home.
In the top of the third, senior Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) notched a one-out double, as senior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Todd joined her on base with a walk and a hit, respectively. Slowinski would score on a fielder's choice to push the RU lead to 3-0.
Sweeney backed the offense with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the frame, marking six consecutive batters retired at the plate.
As Sweeney and the defense maintained a strong performance, Huang kept the offense rolling with a triple to right field in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Whitley would send Huang in, extending the RU lead at 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Rutgers cushioned its lead with two runs on two hits. After Slowinski led off the frame with a single and Adams followed with a walk, Todd registered a double to send in a run. Adams would then score on a wild pitch, making the RU lead 6-0.
Sweeney then registered her seventh straight scoreless inning, stranding two UMass runners on to seal the shutout.
Up next, Rutgers continues its week-long spring break trip with a stop at Florida International for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 15. First game is set for a 5 p.m. ET start.
