Tennis Drops Road Match to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - Rutgers tennis fell on the road to Wisconsin, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Nielson Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point, but were swept in singles action during the conference dual.

Competing in the No. 1 doubles position, seniors Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) collected their second doubles victory of the season, defeating the duo of Maria Avgerinos and Lauren Chypyha, 6-3. Senior Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and junior Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) also found success in the No. 3 position with their win against Kelsey Grambeau and Kendall Kirsch, 6-4.

It marked the second time this season RU walked away with the doubles point, as the team also secured doubles play against Penn State on April 3 at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.

The Badgers swept Rutgers in singles play, but Li took her match in No. 1 singles into the deciding third set. After dropping the first set to Chypyha, 6-2, Li battled back for a 6-3 win in the second stanza. Chypyha, who entered the match as the No. 54 singles player in the country, held on for the win with a 6-2 triumph in the third set.

Rutgers closes out the regular season on Sunday, when it competes at Minnesota on Sunday, April 24, at 11:00 a.m. EST.
