PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's cross country team's 2016 schedule was released on Tuesday with four invitationals on the docket before the championship season featuring the Metropolitan and Big Ten Championships along with the NCAA Regional.
"This year's cross country schedule provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to run in some of the biggest and most competitive competitions in the country on multiple weekends," said head coach James Robinson. "We're striving to continuously raise our level of performances and I believe that competing against a plethora of great teams across the country will encourage our program's growth. Certainly, the more competitive invitationals will prepare us for the Big Ten and NCAA Mid-Atlantic District II Championships."
The season gets underway with a return to the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10 in State College, Pennsylvania and follows with a trip down Route 1 for the Rider Invitational in Pennington, New Jersey on Friday, Sept. 16.
RU will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 24 for The Griak Invitational, racing on the same course that will be used for the Big Ten Championships in mid-Nov.
The Scarlet Knights also make their annual appearance at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh taking place this year on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The two-time defending Metropolitan Champions will defend their title on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Van Cortland Park. A member of the Rutgers women's cross country team has won the Metropolitan Championship individual title 13 times since 1993. Last season, RU won the team championship with three top 10 placements including a third place performance by Allyson Black and an eighth place finish by Alexandra Juzwiak.
The Big Ten Championship will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 30 while the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional will be run in State College, Pennsylvania on Friday, Nov. 1. Black was named All-Mid-Atlantic at last year's NCAA regional after posting a top 25 finish.
