SEATTLE - Junior Josh Hicks rushed for 70 yards and senior Janarion Grant added a score on the ground, but Rutgers football (0-1) fell to No. 14/18 Washington (1-0), 48-13, Saturday afternoon in front of 58,640 fans at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
The Huskies put the first points on the board, scoring on a 43-yard TD pass from Jake Browning to Chico McClatcher. Cameron Van Winkle connected on a 45-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead with 7:21 left to play in the first.
Washington extended its lead to 17-0 with a 38-yard Browning touchdown pass to John Ross. Browning and Ross connected on the Huskies' next possession, a 50-yard strike down the middle to pull ahead 24-0.
The Scarlet Knights snapped their scoreless streak with a field goal from 38 yards out by junior David Bonagura to make it 24-3. A 92-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff and 42-yard field goal to close out the second quarter as Washington took a 34-3 lead into halftime.
A Huskies punt return (68 yards) touchdown and 4-yard touchdown strike gave Washington a 48-3 lead to end three quarters of play.
Rutgers added another field goal from Bonagura, this time from 23 yards out in the fourth quarter to make it 48-6. The Scarlet Knights scored their first offensive touchdown on a 10-yard carry by Grant on a direct snap, pulling to within 48-13.
Washington and Rutgers would trade possessions down the stretch, but the Huskies would hold on for the victory.
RU makes its 2016 debut at High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 10 against Howard. The contest will be one of three-straight games in Piscataway for the Scarlet Knights.
