Men's Golf Finishes Third at Mountaineer Invitational

Holuta ties for third after recording six-under-par 66 in final round
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. --- Rutgers men's golf finished third at the Mountaineer Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Scarlet Knights carded a four-over-par 868 (282-298-288) and shot an even 288 as a team in the final round at the Pete Dye Golf Club. Senior Matt Holuta tied for third after the co-captain carded a six-under-par 66 in the final round of play.
Sophomore Tony Jiang and freshman Christopher Gotterup finished tied for 10th to give Rutgers three golfers within the top 10.
"It was a good tournament for us and one that we had a chance to win, so in that regard it was a success," said head coach Rob Shutte. "It was bittersweet that we came up a little short at the end with an opportunity to win down the stretch. But with three guys finishing in the top 10, we're really excited for the rest of the fall season."
RU placed just four strokes behind tournament champion Bowling Green, who finished with an even 864 (290-287-287). Host West Virginia finished second with a two-over-par 866 (291-298-277). Due to darkness during the second round on Monday, the field played out the remainder of round two Tuesday morning before finishing the final stanza Tuesday afternoon.
It was another impressive showing for Rutgers, as the program fired off a six-under-par 282 in the first round on Monday, the top team total in round one in the 16-team field. Four of five starters produced either even or under-par scorecards on the first 18 holes, as Gotterup led the entire field with his three-under-par 69 in round one.
Holuta moved up 20 positions in the final round of action, as the Indiana, Pennsylvania, native ended his last 18 holes with a six-under-66 to tie for third in the field. Holuta produced six birdies in Tuesday's final round, which included back-to-back birdies on holes two and three. Holuta finished at three-under-par for the tournament (71-76-66) and led the Scarlet Knights in par three scoring with a 2.83 average.
Gotterup finished strong with a one-over-par 73 in his final round, which included three birdies. The Little Silver, New Jersey, native ended tied for 10th (69-74-73), as he opened the invite with a three-under-par 69 to highlight his impressive performance in West Virginia. Jinag also finished with a one-over-par 73 in the final round and tied for 10th in the field.
Rutgers continues its fall season at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 16-17 in Washington, D.C.

Off of his Janney Invitational tournament victory, freshman Oliver Whatley finished tied for 43rd with a 223 (71-76-76) three-round total, which included a one-under-par 71 on Monday.
