Gotterup and Holuta tie for second after six-man playoff
BEALLSVILLE, Md. - Rutgers men's golf finished second with a 897 (301-302-294) at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon in Beallsville, Maryland. After closing out the event tied for first and entering a thrilling six-man playoff, senior Matt Holuta and freshman Christopher Gotterup tied for second to close out action at the Members Club at Four Streams.
Holuta produced a one-over-par 72 in the final round to finish six-over-par for the tournament (219: 71-76-72). Gotterup, who led after the first two rounds of play, produced a three-over-par 74 on Tuesday to also conclude at six over (219: 70-75-74), as both Scarlet Knights advanced to a six-man playoff. Navy's Charlie Musto would go on to claim the individual championship.
As a team, RU finished just three strokes behind tournament winner Georgetown, as they recorded their best 18-hole result in the final round. Four of Rutgers' five starters improved their scores from the second to third rounds, as Rutgers dealt with adverse playing conditions during the first 36 holes on Monday.
The Scarlet Knights continued their strong play during the fall campaign, as the team recorded its second top-three team finish in as many chances. RU placed third at the Mountaineer Invitational last week in Bridgeport, West Virginia, as three Scarlet Knights - Holuta, Gotterup and sophomore Tony Jiang - finished within the top 10.
"Similar to last week, we had a lot of positives to take out from our performance, as we were in contention to win with guys individually and as a team," said head coach Rob Shutte. "It was disappointing because it was a tournament we could have won, but Georgetown played a good last day. I was proud of the way guys competed. We have an explosive group with a new guy appearing towards the top of each tournament."
Freshman Oliver Whatley tied for 21st in the field with a 228 (80-75-73), as the rookie closed out the intercollegiate with a two-over-par 73. Jiang (232: 80-76-76) and senior Toks Pedro (232: 81-76-75) tied for 36th to round out the team scorecard.
Competing for the first time this fall as an individual, sophomore Adam Gray tied for 30th with a three-round score of 230 (80-74-76).
RU placed ahead of Seton Hall, Saint Joseph's, William & Mary, Temple, Gerogetown's second team, Rhode Island, Florida Atlantic and Stetson.
Rutgers closes out its fall campaign at the Kiawah Classic from Oct. 30-31 in Kiawah, South Carolina.
