SCOUTING RUTGERS
The Scarlet Knights will look to return to the win column after taking a 35-6 road loss against No. 14 Penn State last week. Redshirt freshman
Lawrence Stevens recovered a live ball off the opening kickoff to give RU possession deep in PSU territory, with fifth-year senior
Andrew Harte connecting for a 33-yard field goal. Later on in the first quarter after two defensive stops, the Rutgers offense orchestrated a 15-play drive over 7:45, the longest drive by plays and time this season, that ended with another Harte field goal to put the visitors up 6-0 with 11:16 left in the second quarter. However, the Nittany Lions responded with two touchdowns before halftime and pulled away with three more scores in the second half.
Â
Before the setback, Rutgers had won three of its previous four games in league play. The three wins match the team-high in a Big Ten season, also done in 2014. In addition, RU has those three victories coming off an 0-9 conference season in 2016, as only six of the previous 30 Big Ten teams since 1960 coming off a winless league season have won at least three in conference play the next year. The high mark over that span is four (Minnesota, 1989; Iowa, 1968).
Â
Junior linebackers
Trevor Morris and
Deonte Roberts are tied for the team lead with 81 tackles, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. The unit has held opponents to 32 percent on third downs to sit No. 24 nationally, while being third in the league with 11 interceptions. In addition, RU has six sacks in its last two games after totaling eight in the first eight outings.
Â
Offensively, junior
Giovanni Rescigno is 3-2 as the starting quarterback. He led the team with 57 rushing yards at Penn State after collecting 54 versus Maryland. Fifth-year senior
Gus Edwards ranks ninth in the Big Ten with 673 yards on the ground this season, owning a team-best seven total touchdowns. Also in the backfield, senior
Robert Martin has 2,233 career rushing yards and needs just 37 more to move into ninth in school history.
Â
In the passing game, junior
Jerome Washington has a team-best 25 receptions, averaging 10.2 yards per catch. Senior
Janarion Grant is up to 99 career receptions and has totaled 100 career plays gaining 20 or more yards. He leads all active FBS players with 3,445 career return yards on special teams.
Â
Harte has made his last three field goals to improve to 7-for-10 on the season with a long of 50 yards. Fifth-year senior
Ryan Anderson is second in the Big Ten with an average of 43.7 yards per punt. The school record is 44.1 yards by Joe Radigan in 2006.
Â
SCOUTING INDIANA
The Hoosiers, who have played five ranked opponents this season, snapped a four-game losing streak last week with a victory at Illinois. Quarterback Richard Lagow went 32-for-48 passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns, while Cole Gest ran for 82 yards on the ground. For the season, Simmie Cobbs Jr. leads the team with 63 receptions and eight touchdowns (seven receiving). Robert McCray III has collected 5.5 sacks and Tegray Scales paces the defense with 80 tackles. Kicker Griffin Oakes has made 13-of-14 field goals. Head coach Tom Allen is in his first full season leading the program after taking over last December.
Â
THE SERIES
Rutgers won the first two meetings in the series before Indiana claimed last season's matchup. In the last meeting in Bloomington in 2015, RU tied its school record with a 25-point comeback in a 55-52 victory that featured 1,223 combined yards of total offense. The 55 points are the most scored by the Scarlet Knights in a Big Ten game since joining the conference. Rutgers rallied for 28 unanswered points to end the game, as Kyle Federico hit a 26-yard field as time expired.
Â
Last season in Piscataway, Rutgers built a 24-13 lead at the beginning of the third quarter, but Indiana rallied to score three consecutive touchdowns and held on to win. The Scarlet Knights scored touchdowns on a 68-yard reception by Andre Patton, a one-yard run by
Giovanni Rescigno and a 75-yard fumble return by
Darnell Davis. Defensively, RU totaled a season-high 13 tackles-for-loss and special teams blocked two field goals. Rutgers won the first matchup in 2014 by the score of 45-23, its largest margin of victory over a Big Ten opponent in a conference game.
