Women's 6K Race Gets Underway at 10:45 a.m. on Friday
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's cross country team is back to racing on Friday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course hosted by Lehigh, one of nine regionals taking place across the country. The 6K race gets underway at 10:45 a.m.
ABOUT THE FIELD
The Mid-Atlantic Regional will feature 28 women's teams in the field including No. 9 Villanova, No. 19 Penn State, No. 27 Georgetown along with Princeton and West Virginia who are receiving votes in the USTFCCCA Poll.
FAMILIAR SETTING
The Scarlet Knights will be racing on the course for the third time this season.
In its first showing on the Lehigh Course, Rutgers took second overall in the season opener with three top 10 placements led by freshman Olympia Martin (22:16.48).
In their next appearance on the 6K route, nearly all the Scarlet Knight scorers captured new personal bests with the top six runners only 60 seconds apart at the Paul Short Invitational.
The Rutgers pack was once again led by Martin, who logged a PR time of 21:31. Also setting personal bests during Paul Short Run were sophomores Emma Bergman (22:12), Kelsey Farbanish (24;07), Stephanie Mauer (22:15) and Lou Mialhe (22:35), along with freshman Kiera Nealon (22:20) and senior Alexandra Juzwiak (22:03).
LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR'S REGIONAL
At last year's regional, RU was paced by current senior Alexandra Juzwiak with a finish line time of 22:50.
LAST TIME OUT
The Scarlet Knights are coming off the Big Ten Championships where Rutgers was led by Juzwiak for the second-straight season capturing a time of 22:34.2.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Rutgers women appeared in the USTFCCA Regional Poll the week of Oct. 2, landing at No. 15 in the Mid-Atlantic rankings.
ABOUT THE SQUAD
The Scarlet Knights boast a youthful roster with 11 of the 17 members of the Rutgers roster listed as either freshmen or sophomores. Eight of the nine Scarlet Knights heading out to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania this weekend have set their 6K PR's this season on course at either the Lehigh or Paul Short Invitationals.
Freshman Olympia Martin, the 2016 NJSIAA champion out of Ridgewood High School, has led the Scarlet Knights in three of its five races to date, including a top ten performance at the Lehigh Invitational to open the season. Also consistently among the top runners across the finish line for Rutgers this fall have been sophomores Emma Bergman and Nadia Saponara, who both had top 20 finishes at the Metropolitan Championships.
RU's top experienced runner and the top Scarlet Knight finisher at the conference championships the last two seasons, as well as last year's regional, senior Alexandra Juzwiak, captured a new PR in her last 6K race. Juzwiak posted a time of 22:03 at the Paul Short Invitational in late September and was her best finish for the North Middletown, New Jersey native since the 2014 Big Ten Championships.
