BOCA RATON, FLA. - The Rutgers softball team captured a 7-0 victory over Brown on Sunday morning to conclude its outing at the Parents' Weekend Tournament hosted by FAU.
Senior Shayla Sweeney (4-3) registered her second complete game shutout of the season, allowing seven hits and no walks. Leading the Scarlet Knights (4-15), freshman Hailey Hoklotubbe went 2-for-3 at the plate and added in two runs. Senior Bridget Carr posted a team-high two RBIs with a double.
Brown (0-8) was led by Sofia Venegas with two hits, while Julia Schoenewald added in a double. Katie Orona suffered the loss for the Bears.
Following a scoreless first for either side, Rutgers jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After two errors and hit for Hoklotubbe loaded the bases, Carr knocked a double to right field to send in two runs. A sacrifice bunt for Meaghan Wells followed by a sacrifice fly for freshman Taryn Atlee added two more runs to the RU advantage.
Although Brown found six hits across the following innings of the game, Sweeney remained strong in the circle by allowing no runs to cross.
Following a walk for senior Carly Todd to lead off the bottom of the sixth, Hoklotubbe used a bunt single to help move Todd up to third. From there, the duo executed a double steal as Todd stole home. An RBI single for Sierra Maddox would then send Hoklotubbe home. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Nicole Bowman worked a walk to force in the run and push the lead to 7-0.
In the top of the seventh, Brown registered a hit, but Sweeney would retire the final two batters at the plate to seal the shutout.
