Las Vegas - Rutgers tennis fell to Big Ten foe Indiana, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The Scarlet Knights captured the doubles points, while junior Mingxiu Du registered a victory in No. 2 singles to highlight action for RU.
Rutgers wraps up its spring training trip with a 1-1 record after it defeated Bradley, 6-1, on Tuesday.
"It was a close match today," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "The team played hard and smart, but Indiana was just a little better today. We are showing improvement in doubles and singles and are looking forward to our next matches."
Rutgers started fast in doubles, as Du and freshman Katherine Muzik combined for a 6-3 victory against Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen. Freshman Jacqueline Cochrane and senior Farris Cunningham won in No. 3 doubles, 6-4, to clinch the point.
Du contributed a three-set decision over Paula Gutierrez for the Scarlet Knights' only win in singes action. Du secured the first set, 6-1, before she fell in the second by a 6-3 margin. Du responded with a decisive 6-2 win to earn the match point.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when the Scarlet Knights compete at Illinois.
