RALEIGH, N.C. - The Rutgers softball team defeated Lehigh, 6-1, in the consolation game of the Homewood Suites RDU/RTP Invitational on Sunday morning at Dail Stadium. The Scarlet Knights conclude the tournament in third place.
In the circle for RU (3-11), senior Shayla Sweeney threw her second complete game victory of the season to improve to a record of 3-2. The righthander allowed only four hits and two walks and delivered three strikeouts.
Junior Rebecca Hall registered a three-run home run to cushion the RU victory. Freshman Hailey Hoklotubbe matched her career best with three hits.
Lehigh (4-6) was led by Mary-Hannah Smith with a double and an RBI, while Jennifer Stoll notched the Mountain Hawks lone run. Christine Campbell (3-1) suffered the loss in the circle for Lehigh.
Although Lehigh added a run on two hits in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 edge, Rutgers countered in the top of the second with two runs on three hits and an error.
Freshman Nicole Bowman led off the frame with a double and was advanced to third on a Lehigh miscue. Junior Sierra Maddox would then send her home with an RBI single to tie the score. Hoklotubbe followed with an RBI single of her own to put RU in the lead 2-1.
Sweeney took control of the circle registering four scoreless frames and limiting the Mountain Hawks to only two hits across the span.
In the top of the sixth, Rutgers loaded the bases with three consecutive hits for Hoklotubbe, Meaghan Wells and Taryn Atlee. After senior Carly Todd used a sacrifice fly to send in a run, a three-run home run for Hall would set the Scarlet Knight lead at 6-1.
Sweeney backed up the offense with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh, closing the game with a streak of 12 consecutive batters retired at the plate.
