IOWA CITY, IOWA - The Rutgers softball team was edged by Iowa, 2-0, in a pitchers' duel on Friday night at Pearl Field. The Hawkeyes broke through a four-inning stalemate to inch away with the win.

Senior Carly Todd added the lone hit for RU (10-28, 1-9 Big Ten). Classmate Shayla Sweeney pitched her ninth complete game of the season.

Iowa (13-23, 6-6 Big Ten) was led by Kaitlyn Mullarkey with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Allison Doocy earned the complete game victory for the Hawkeyes.

Rutgers and Iowa were knotted 0-0 after three frames, as Sweeney worked to strand a total of five Hawkeyes on base across the span.

After freshman Nicole Bowman was hit by pitch to lead off the fourth inning, the contest entered a rain delay. Returning from the break, Todd added a single to put two runners on. However, no runs would cross for RU as the game stayed scoreless.

The teams remained locked iat 0-0 until Iowa tacked on the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. After leading off with a single, Mullarkey rounded the bases on a sacrifice bunt from Allie Wood and went on to cross home on an RU error.

As the Scarlet Knight bats remained quiet, the Hawkeyes added another run for a 2-0 lead on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Sweeney induced a groundout to end the frame, stranding three more Hawkeyes on to keep it a two-run game.

However, in the top of the seventh, RU stranded a runner of its own to end the game.

RU's series with Iowa continues Saturday afternoon with a contest set for 2 p.m. ET.

KNIGHT NOTES
-Rutgers has played 35 of 38 contests on the road in 2017. After opening the season on a 34-game road swing, RU hosted its first three home contests last weekend before returning to the road for the Iowa series.
-The contest marked the first regular season meeting between the Scarlet Knights and Hawkeyes as conference foes. The teams last met at the 2015 Big Ten Tournament.
