PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's track and field team captured the 2017 Metropolitan Outdoor Championship team title on Saturday afternoon at the Bauer Track and Field Complex behind nine event titles and six runner-up performances.
Rutgers captured 190 points to lead the 12-team field on its home turf. St. John's, last season's champions, finished in second with 162 points, while Manhattan placed third racking up 120 points.
The Scarlet Knights were led by Bria Saunders who took home a trio of titles. The junior Scarlet Knight posted a season-best time of 11.80 to win the 100m, logged a top time of 23.85 in the 200m and anchored the 4x100m relay team to first place.
On the track, Rutgers also saw event victories in the 400m, 800m, 5000m and 4x800m relay. Phyllis Gordon racked up two titles with her 400m run and performance with the 4x100m relay. The Neptune, New Jersey product produced a time of 56.54 for the 400m title.
Sarah Robbie also collected a pair of Met titles this weekend. Coming off a PR last weekend, the senior Scarlet Knight placed first in the 800m with her time of 2:12.28, along with taking first place with the 4x800m relay team.
Fifth-year senior Paige Senatore, racing in her final home event of her career, captured the sixth Metropolitan title of her career with the top finish in the 5000m in a time of 17:39.49. The Delsea, New Jersey native won the 3000m title during the indoor season this winter, as well as the 5000m indoor title in 2015, the 5000m outdoor title in 2016 and the 2014 & 2015 cross country titles.
Both relay entries were victorious with the 4x100m relay team of Nabiya Garrett, Imani Beauliere, Gordon and Saunders combining for a time of 46.77 and the 4x800m relay squad of Brianna Haspel, Kaitlyn Bedard, Jenna Sobieski and Robbie posting a time of 9:16.82.
Other notable results from the track were runner-up performances by Nadia Saponara in the 5000m with a PR of 17:47.15 and Sabrina Alexander in the 100m hurdles in 14.49.
The Scarlet Knights also collected field event victories in the high jump and javelin.
Rhonda Rogombe cleared the bar at 1.66m (5' 5.25") for first in the high jump. Katherine Johnston, meanwhile, picked up the javelin title at a season-best distance of 47.96m (157' 4").
RU also saw runner-up showings by Oksana Sokolova in the long jump at a distance of 5.72m (18' 9.25"), Halia Rosemond with a season-best throw of 41.22m (135' 3") in the discus and Alison Chomsky in the javelin at 40.52m (132' 11").
Additionally, Drew Andrews was the runner-up in the heptathlon collecting a career-best 4,001 points. During the competition, Andrews took second in the 100m hurdles and third in the long jump.
The Rutgers women's track and field team is back to action at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia on April 21-22.
