PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior Emeka Eze and junior Christopher Mirabelli broke school records as Rutgers men's track and field captured the 2017 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships Saturday at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
During the meet, six seniors - Eze, Thomas Carr, Brendan Jaeger, Kyle Holder, Sean McEvoy and Nick Price - were honored for their contributions to the program.
"It was a great team win as we scored a lot of points in many events as well as broke two school records," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "It's always good to win the Mets, which is 70, 80 years old. It was a good send off for the seniors as well."
Competing in the triple jump, Eze recorded the program mark with a jump of 15.92m (52' 2.75") on his final attempt of the day. The Sayreville, New Jersey, native broke Adam Bergo's previous record of 15.73m (51'7.25") set in 2013 at the Big East Championships. Bergo was in attendance to see Eze's record-setting performance.
Eze also claimed the long jump title with his result of 7.81m (25' 7.50"). His result was the second best all-time in school history behind Corey Crawford and is currently the top jump in the Big Ten Conference.
On Friday, Mirabelli collected the Scarlet Knight record in the javelin with a throw of 76.20m (250'00") to capture the event title. The Lumberton, New Jersey, native broke Chris Sagnella's old RU record of 244'10" set back in 1996.
A big part of RU's team victory was the performance of sophomore Izaiah Brown. The Amsterdam, New York, native captured both the 400m (47.33) and 200m (21.41) titles and helped Rutgers earn wins in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
With Brown as the anchor, Rutgers cruised to a win in the 4x400m relay to help the Scarlet Knights claim the Metropolitan Championships. Holder, Jaeger and sophomore Edward Zalek finished with a time of 3:17.17 in the event.
In the high jump, freshman Perry Christie finished first with a PR of 2.02m (6' 7.50"). Freshman Tobi Tella placed second in the long jump with his mark of 7.51m (24' 7.75").
Holder placed first in the 400m hurdles with his time of 53.00. RU's other individual win came courtesy of junior Alexander Livernois, who claimed the 10000m title with his PR of 31:58.37 on Friday.
Rutgers had a number of top-three individual finishes throughout the weekend. In the discus, freshman Jason Campbell placed second with his distance of 49.01m (160' 09"). Carr finished second in the javelin with his throw of 70.29m (230' 07"), while sophomore Jordan Lorenzo had a third-place leap in the high jump at 1.97m (6' 5.50").
Sophomore Jairus Paul had a PR in the triple jump with his third-place result of 15.19m (49' 10").
In track events, Jaeger produced a time of 1:53.55 in the 800m, good for second. Sophomore Dominick Munson PR'd in the 1500m with his second-place result of 3:58.38, while classmate Conor Murphy collected a PR in the 5000m with his third-place time of 15:07.39.
Rutgers returns to action next weekend, when the Scarlet Knights travel to Georgia Tech Invitational from April 21-22 in Atlanta.
