PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers softball team fell in its finale with Michigan State by a score of 14-2 on Sunday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.
Senior Bridget Carr and junior Sierra Maddox each added two hits to lead RU (13-33, 4-14 Big Ten). Sophomore Whitney Jones suffered the loss in the circle.
MSU ( 27-20, 8-12 Big Ten) was led by Lea Foerster and Kelcey Carrasco with four hits each, while Kaitlyn Eveland added four RBIs. Kristina Zalewski earned the complete-game win.
Michigan State moved to a 4-0 advantage with three runs on four hits in the first inning and a solo home run for Foerster in the second.
Although Rutgers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on hits for senior Carly Todd, freshman Anyssa Iliopoulos, and Carr, the Scarlet Knights were unable to cut into the deficit.
MSU then added four runs on five hits in the third inning to extend its lead to 8-0.
In the top of the fourth, RU notched a run on two hits. Carr notched an RBI single to help RU cut into the deficit, 8-1.
The Spartans responded with six runs on six hits in the top of the fifth.
After back-to-back hits for Hall and Maddox kicked off the bottom of the frame, senior Dana Hendry drew a walk to load the bases. As Iliopoulos reached on a fielder's choice, Hall crossed home. However, the late rally was not enough for the Scarlet Knights.
