NCAA Regional Begins Thursday

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 2017 NCAA East Regional gets underway on Thursday with three members of the Rutgers women's outdoor track and field team vying for spots at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in June. Competing will be senior Katherine Johnston in the javelin, junior Bria Saunders in the 200m and sophomore Rhonda Rogombe in the high jump.

Katherine Johnston - Javelin
Johnston will be the first Scarlet Knight to compete at the regional contending for one of 12 javelin spots to qualify for the championships.
Johnston was the runner-up in the javelin at the Big Ten Championships where she captured the silver medal with a distance of 49.10m (161' 1"). The Moorestown, New Jersey native's throw at the conference championships places her 19th in the East Region. During the 2017 outdoor campaign, Johnston was the Metropolitan Championship and Georgia Tech Invitational champion.
Bria Saunders -200m
Saunders will compete in the opening heat of the 200m on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The top 24 athletes will advance to the quarterfinals with the top three from each of the six heats advancing along with the next six best times. Should Saunders advance, she will race again on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in the quarterfinals where 12 runners - three from each heat plus the next three best times - will advance to Eugene, Oregon.
Saunders is a regional qualifier in the 200m for the second-straight season. This spring she was a finalist in the event at the Big Ten Championships where she finished in seventh with a PR of 23.36. During the season, the Parsippany, New Jersey product captured 200m titles at the Metropolitan Championships, as well at the Georgia Tech and USF Invitationals.
Rhonda Rogombe - High Jump
Rogombe will look to clear the bar on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The top 12 athletes from the East Region will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump.
Rogombe, who holds the Rutgers school record in the indoor high jump, makes her first regional appearance. At the Big Ten Championships, she placed seventh in the event at a height of 1.70m (5' 7"). The Charlestown, West Virginia resident won the Metropolitan Championship title in the event and was the runner-up at the Colonial Relays earlier this season where cleared the bar at 1.75m (5' 8.75").
