Johnston Lands 15th in Javelin at NCAA Regional
May 25 | Women's Track & Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Rutgers' Katherine Johnston placed 15th in the javelin at the 2017 NCAA East Regional held at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field on Thursday evening. The senior Scarlet Knight was three spots shy of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The javelin start was pushed back two hours due to impending weather conditions this afternoon. Johnston, who competed in the second of three flights, threw her best distance of night of 45.98m (150' 10") on the second of her three attempts down the runway. She was 1.25m (4' 1") short of landing in the top 12 in the field of 48 and earning a trip to Hayward Field in June.
The Moorestown, New Jersey native was the runner-up in the javelin at the Big Ten Championships earlier this month where she captured the silver medal with a distance of 49.10m (161' 1"). The throw at the conference championships placed her 19th in the East Region and was the fifth best javelin distance in Rutgers women's track & field history.
In addition to her performance at the Big Ten Championships, Johnston was the Metropolitan Championship and Georgia Tech Invitational champion during the 2017 outdoor campaign.
Two Scarlet Knights will be competing on Friday at the 2017 NCAA East Regional. Sophomore Rhonda Rogombe will take part in the high jump at 4:30 p.m. followed by junior Bria Saunders racing in the quarterfinals of the 200m at 7:30 p.m.
