PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers softball team split its doubleheader with Maryland on Wednesday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (13-34, 4-15) first fell by a score of 4-3 in the opening contest before claiming a 4-3 win over the Terrapins (11-35-1, 4-15 Big Ten) in the second.
GAME ONE
Rutgers moved to a 3-0 lead in the contest before Maryland tied it up in the fifth inning. The Terps then added a run in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Six different Scarlet Knights added hits, while sophomore Nicolette Anico led the way with two hits, a run and an RBI. Senior Shayla Sweeney suffered the loss for RU.
Skylynne Ellazar led Maryland with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Hannah Dewey picked up the win for the Terps, while Madison Martin claimed a save.
Following two scoreless innings, Rutgers strung together four hits to send in the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the third. With two-outs, Anico kept RU alive with a base hit, sending home freshman Anyssa Iliopoulos. After junior Rebecca Hall doubled to send in Anico, classmate Sierra Maddox joined in with an RBI-single of her own to set the RU lead at 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, Maryland tied up the score with three runs on four hits. Freshman Taryn Atlee snagged a pop up at second base to strand the leading run on and end the frame with the score knotted, 3-3.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Maryland's Sarah Calta posted an RBI single to send in a run for a 4-3 lead and the contest's final score.
GAME TWO
Rutgers claimed the lead early and never let go, as the Scarlet Knights topped the Terps, 4-3, in game two.
Rebecca Hall led RU with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a home run. Sweeney earned the victory, while sophomore Whitney Jones collected a save.
In the bottom of the second, freshman Hailey Hoklotubbe posted an RBI single to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead in the contest.
Rutgers then pushed its lead to 2-0 in the third. After posting a two-out base hit, Hall went on to score on a wild pitch to extend the RU edge.
After senior Carly Todd led off the fourth frame with a double, Atlee later sent her home with an RBI single for a 3-0 RU edge.
UMD then cut into the RU lead with a run on three hits in the top of the fifth, setting the score at 3-1.
Hall responded with a home run to center field in the bottom of the frame to extend RU's lead back to three at 4-1.
Sweeney would retire three of four batters in the top of the sixth, closing the frame with a strikeout to keep RU's lead unharmed.
Despite Maryland generating two runs in the seventh, Jones would strand two more Terps by inducing a groundout to seal the victory.
