Volleyball Claims RMU Invite Title Despite Loss in Finale
Sep 16 | Women's Volleyball
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Sept. 16, 2017) – Rutgers volleyball earned the Robert Morris Invitational championship despite a straight-set loss to the host Colonials in the finale on Saturday afternoon by counts of 25-20, 25-20, 25-21.
With a 2-1 weekend record, the Scarlet Knights (5-7) claim their second invitational crown of the non-conference tournament season, adding to their win at the East Carolina Invitational to open 2017. Robert Morris improves to 6-9 with the win.
In her third start of the season, sophomore outside hitter Jillian Duffin acclimated to a new position with great success. Normally a right side, Duffin posted her second double-digit kill count in as many days with 13 against RMU on .400 hitting to go with two blocks.
Set 1 | Robert Morris 25, Rutgers 20
The Colonial took control of the set with a 7-0 run to go up 13-7. Rutgers fought back to tie 15-15 with a 7-0 run of their own on the back of two Duffin kills, the first of two late-set tie scores. The second tie, at 20-20, was set up by a kill from freshman outside hitter Yana Kamshilina, followed by freshman opposite hitter Kamila Cieslik's service ace. RMU went on to win the final five points to claim the set.
Set 2 | Robert Morris 25, Rutgers 20
The hosts again used an early run to set the tone, this time a 5-0 spurt and a 9-6 advantage, a lead RMU would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Rutgers got as close as 15-13 before the Colonials maintained a slight lead until the set win.
Set 3 | Robert Morris 25, Rutgers 21
Despite a close set featuring eight tie scores all the way to 18-18, the Colonials completed the sweep with three separate 3-0 runs down the stretch. Rutgers took an early 7-6 lead on three consecutive kills of the hand of sophomore middle blocker Stasa Miljevic. Two kills by freshman right side Kamila Cieslik helped RU maintain a slim three-point lead midway through, but RMU regained a lead at 19-18 and never looked back.
Match Notes
Rutgers gets set for the start of Big Ten play at home in College Avenue Gym on Friday, Sept. 22 against Iowa and Saturday, Sept. 23 against No. 10 Nebraska.
