Rutgers Head Coach Chris Ash
CHRIS ASH: All right, guys. Appreciate you coming. Credit to Michigan. It's a very good football team. Got really good players. And coming into the game, they were playing as good as probably anybody in the country. To play a team like that, you got to play almost perfect football, and we made some mistakes in all three phases of the game that let that score get the way that it did. Really proud of our guys. The effort, the attitude, the fight. We've just got to keep working, keep getting better, and we will. So with that, I'll go ahead and open up for questions.
Q. Thoughts on Isaih's production today?
CHRIS ASH: I thought it was outstanding. I think, again, you've seen glimpses of that throughout the season. To do it against an opponent and a defense like that, those are just signs of things to come.
Q. Michigan went 9 for 14 on third down. What was the issue?
CHRIS ASH: Good players make plays. Can't put it any simpler than that, you know. They pass protected well. And some of their play actions, we couldn't get to the quarterback, and that's really the difference.
Q. Is there any reason why Pacheco only got three carries over the next two quarters after the 80-yard touchdown?
CHRIS ASH: No. Just the flow of the game. Just things that we were calling offensively to try to work against that defense. That's a good defense. We had a game plan, and we just were working the game plan.
Q. Chris, Michigan has always played a line of scrimmage game. How do you think your guys held up physically?
CHRIS ASH: I think very well. I've got to watch the tape before I say that too much. That's a very good football team up front on both sides of the ball. They're big, they're strong, they're a veteran group, and I thought we battled exceptionally well. It's unfortunate we gave up the long run at the end, 61-yard run. We misfit a run. Other than that, I thought we played really good run defense tonight defensively. Offensively, I think we ended with 193 yards rushing. That's one of the best rushing performances we've had in a long, long time against a team of that quality. So I'm pleased with what I felt I saw from the sideline, but I've got to watch the tape first.
Q. How do you get the passing game on the level that the rushing game has been?
CHRIS ASH: Until tonight, our rushing game has been an issue. That's part of the issues in the pass game. But you play a team like this, they can rush the passer. They play press coverage. It's a tough combination when they do that. They've got the best pass defense in America, I think, if you look at the stats, or one of them. Passing the ball against these guys was going to be tough. We can't stand back there very long and protect against that defensive line. It's tough to get open against their DBs, the way they play. We do need to continue to work it. We will. It's an area of emphasis for our whole offense. We've got to get better.
Q. Was it an issue, the couple screen passes early on that dropped or just didn't connect, did that kind of get you guys off schedule?
CHRIS ASH: Yeah. There were some plays early in the game that we felt like we could take advantage of and make. We didn't, unfortunately, but we thought they were there. And, again, got to go back and watch the film. It just felt like we had a couple opportunities that we didn't capitalize on.
Q. Avery Young takes off on fourth down and the pass breakup, how much progress has he made from when he started until now?
CHRIS ASH: Oh, a ton. I absolutely love the kid. I think a lot of our young players have made a ton of progress from the first time they've been playing. The first game for Avery was against Ohio State. He got beat several times in that game. Tonight, he defended several passes, gave up the one touchdown to a really good receiver. But I love Avery. He's getting better every week, and it's because of his attitude and his preparation. He's a competitive guy. Can't say enough good things about him.
Q. The wildcat, the trick plays in general, was that a result of the offense stalling or was that something you guys planned?
CHRIS ASH: No, it's part of the game plan.
Q. How do you think the wildcat looked?
CHRIS ASH: We had a couple plays. Obviously, put the one ball on the ground. Unfortunately, we didn't get it recovered was probably the bigger issue. But I thought we got a lot of production out of it. Again, got to watch the tape to see for sure. But I thought it gave us an added dimension that we hadn't shown yet.
Q. Reggie Sutton, I know, last week he was in line (no microphone). What led to that, and what made you guys realize that he could fulfill that role?
CHRIS ASH: We've been really high on Reggie since training camp. And when Jerome's been out, he's probably our best blocking tight end. We have struggled to block at tight end. It's an area we've got to get better at. Our tight ends are very young. Reggie's a lot bigger than those guys. He's got pretty good feet and athletic ability. We're trying to find a role for some players that can help us improve and get better. That's really what he's done. He found a role. Obviously, he helped us tonight. He made some big blocks, and he keeps getting better. We've been high on Reggie since training camp.
Q. Thanks, Coach.
CHRIS ASH: Thank you, guys. Take care.
Rutgers Running Back Isaih Pacheco
On his touchdown: "It was in a huge moment; the line did a great job. In the outside zone I saw a huge hole and tried to take advantage advantage and made a couple guys miss to get us back on the score board, even the game out, see what could happen next."
On the overall result: "We're working really hard were improving every week. It's a tough conference, every week were working hard. We got the linemen coming back next year, we still have two games left. We're not really worried about our record because we have nothing to lose. Every week we get our chance and we just go out there and keep working hard."
On facing Michigan's defense: "We just go over the schemes every week in the film session, we just study them. Go home, study them. Just try to pick out their weaknesses and just try to take advantage of what's here and there."
On making the most of his opportunities: "Every chance I get I try to take advantage. I tell the line, let's try to go out there every play we get and go full blown we don't have anything to lose so we just have to keep going, keep fighting, we are going to get somewhere."
Rutgers Quarterback Artur Sitkowski
On the overall result: "Played hard. We all played hard, offense, defense, everyone played hard. It was great attitude great effort on all. We played hard, that's the biggest thing, we played hard. We believed. We went out there and we fought every play no matter what the outcome. So I'm proud of my guys, proud of my teammates we fought and we played hard."
On Pacheco's touchdown: "We believe as soon as we set foot on that field. We believe, we all believe. We believed since we saw Michigan on the schedule. No matter what was going to happen we all believed in each other. When Isaih hit that run, we were all excited. It shows we can do it. We can do anything we put our minds to."
On Penn State next week: "So excited. So excited for the opportunity. This is a cross town rival, they say it's a big rivalry, Penn State versus Rutgers. Were all fired up, ready to go. Well learn from today and bring it against Penn State."
Rutgers Defensive Back Avery Young
On his big fourth-down tackle: "It brought the juice for sure. It was a big stop, it was a big play. I'm looking to make plays all the time. To be able to contribute and get our guys off the field it meant a lot to everybody."
On what happen on the Michigan third touchdown: "Blown coverages happen with every team, and we are trying to minimize it as much as we can. Unfortunately, it happened and led to the opponent scoring, so we need to clean it up in practice."
On what the team needs to do to improve: "We're going to fight with anybody. It doesn't matter who lines up across from us, we don't care about their uniforms, colors, tradition, were going to fight regardless. I'm just proud of my guys because we fought until the last whistle and we've done that the last couple of weeks. There's been major improvements because of that and it starts with competitive practices, getting after each other, making each other better each and every day."
On how the team has improved: "I feel like I have made a lot of growth, confidence is riding, and that all comes through working with my guys each and every day in practice. Like I said, highly competitive practices, we get after each other, we try to make it as close to the game as we can. That just allows everyone to grow together and allows our team to grow on the field."
Rutgers Defensive Back Saquan Hampton
On how they played against Michigan: "I think we held our own in the first half. I think we played solid football. We still let a couple of plays get out which we would love to have back, but if we take those plays away, I think overall, we played good defense."
On how the defense stepped up: "Most of the guys now, including myself, are attentive to the little details, not playing mistake free football, and not killing ourselves with penalties and turnovers."
Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh
On QB Shea Patterson: "He really played well tonight. He just does everything you ask him to do. That was a really tough night to throw the ball, it reminded me of my days back in Solider Field with that wind and conditions. But he made some unbelievable throws with that swirling wind. Also our receivers did a great job catching the ball in the elements. Our guys continue to do a really good job catching the ball. That was really impressive. Rutgers was doing a good job containing the run game, but the protection was terrific all night. The throw and catch part was difficult with the conditions, but they did it at as high a level as you could have."
On Rutgers: "Rutgers, their fan base was really good. The team is really improved and competitive. That's a competitive football team. They did as good a job as anybody at containing our running game. I was really impressed with their young running backs, they run hard. The quarterback looked good job. It was a competitive game, and we knew it would be going in. We saw the way they played Northwestern, we saw the way they played Indiana. That's a team that's very close to breaking through and winning multiple consecutive games. I thought Rutgers had a good plan offensively and a good plan defensively."
On Rutgers' touchdown: "They faked the reverse. We were playing the zone read by the quarterback. I don't know how they got inside and we gave up the gap. But those good young backs for Rutgers were really running hard and fast. Good designed play by them. They tried it a few more times after that but we made the adjustments and stopped them after a short game."
On Michigan going forward: "The players get to make the decision about what level they want to play at. How smart they are, how strong, how tough. Nobody gets to make that decision for them. I was excited to see what level we were going to play at tonight. I thought they were going to come out and play at the highest level they could. And I expect that to be the case next week as well. I'm excited to see how they'll respond. We need to be prepared, focused, and take it one game at a time. If we do that, we'll have a good chance."
On RB Tru Wilson: "Tru Wilson did a heck of a job running well. He's gotten so much better on when to cut back, when to lower the shoulder. He was running hard and tough."
On DE Rashan Gary: "He's the same genuine, down-to-earth person he's always been. He's quiet somewhat, when he talks, it's something important. He works hard."
Michigan Quarterback Shea Patterson
On the offense: "It starts with the offensive line. They did a great job protecting. We were just taking what they gave us. We worked hard on the game plan all week. This team all cares about each other so much. We don't get distracted by where we are now, we just approach each week with the same mindset. And then everything else will take care of itself."
Michigan Tight End Zach Gentry
On third down efficiency throughout the game: "A lot of is just comes down to trust. Shea has a lot of trust in us. If a team can convert third downs as successfully as we can, we would take that every week. A lot of things go into it but Shea just threw a really nice ball."
On playing in the windy conditions: "We could tell in pregame warmups, it was not going to be easy, it was gusting big time so we are glad it calmed down in the second down, we thought it would but it definitely was tough."
Michigan Defensive Back Brad Hawkins
On growing as a player this season: "I think I have grown a lot this season, I think I matured a lot, that has definitely help me grow as a player, so I just went out there every day, try to better myself as a player and as a person so I just took that into my own hands, just went out there every day and competed."
Michigan Wide Receiver Nico Collins
On getting deep balls at least once a game: "I just run my route and hopefully take the ball and when I run it, I expect the ball, I see it."
On being wide open on that first touchdown: "I was not expecting the cornerback to pass me off, I thought he has help on the top, but when the play started nobody was there so I was thinking one and one, once he passed me off, Shea found and I caught it."
On connection with quarterback Shea Patterson: "Ever since he got here in the spring, we just found more and more connections every day and build that trust over time."
Michigan Defensive Lineman Rashan Gary
On coming back home and getting a win: "It feels good, its another week winning with my brothers, being able to come back home, having my family here supporting me, getting a win like this, it is great to be a Michigan Wolverine right now."
On seeing the big number of Michigan fans at the game: "It just shows that we are a crazy fanbase, when you come to Michigan, you are joining a family, having that support gives you more energy to show them the talent we have and it is just crazy to have that kind of support."
On the defensive message after the Rutgers touchdown: "Just keep working, one touchdown is not going to hurt us, after that happened we got back to the basics and got it done."
