VANCOUVER, Canada – The Rutgers women's basketball team dropped a 57-40 decision to Gonzaga on Friday afternoon in its second game at the TCL Vancouver Showcase.
Rutgers fell to 4-2 on the season, while Gonzaga, a team receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, improved to 5-1 overall.
Senior center
Victoria Harris led the Scarlet Knight with 12 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line, while adding in four rebounds. Graduate student guard
Charise Wilson added nine points and four rebounds.
Gonzaga leading scoring Zykera Rice was the lone Bulldog in double figures with a game-high 16 points along with five boards.
FIRST QUARTER
The Scarlet Knights held 5-4 lead at first media timeout with two buckets from
Victoria Harris.
The game endured three leads changes from there with Gonzaga going ahead 10-8 at the close of the quarter. The Bulldogs' leading scorer Zykera Rice's accounted for seven of her squad's 10 first quarter points.
SECOND QUARTER
Rutgers wasted no time in getting back the lead. A
Stasha Carey layup tied the game at 10-10 and Gonzaga turned over the ball with a 3-second violation. On the following Scarlet Knight possession, Carey came up with the offensive rebound leading to a
Charise Wilson 3-pointer for a 13-10 lead.
While the Bulldogs struck back with their own shot from long range by Jessie Loera, Rutgers proceeded to hold Gonzaga scoreless over the next four and a half minutes while tallying seven unanswered points to take a 20-13 edge with 3:17 left until the break.
Gonzaga, however, came up with a run of its own to close the second quarter, outscoring RU 8-1 to knot the score at 21-21 to enter halftime.

THIRD QUARTER
It was two ties and two lead changes to kick off the second half as Gonzaga used a 7-0 run to take a 32-25 edge at the midway point of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs endured a two and half minute drought, while a pair of layups by Harris pulled the Scarlet Knights to within three at 32-29 with 2:25 to go in the frame.
Gonzaga, however, gained a 39-29 advantage with seven answered points in a minute's span and held a 42-32 lead entering the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Gonzaga outscored Rutgers, 15-9, in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 19 last in the closing minutes.
