Wharton recipient of Big Ten Sportsmanship Award
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Four Rutgers football players earned honorable mention All-Big Ten and one picked up the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in the Big Ten defense and special teams postseason release posted Tuesday on Big Ten Network.
Senior safety Saquan Hampton and redshirt freshman punter Adam Korsak each were named honorable mention by both the media and coaches, while sophomore placekicker Justin Davidovicz was voted on by the coaches and senior linebacker Trevor Morris in the media poll. In addition, senior cornerback Isaiah Wharton was announced as the Scarlet Knights' recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Davidovicz is the first Rutgers placekicker recognized by the Big Ten since joining the conference and the first Scarlet Knight overall at the position since Jeremy Ito in 2006 (Second Team All-Big East). Davidovicz went 9-for-11 on field goals, including 6-for-6 on attempts inside 40 yards. He connected from 52 away to make it a one-score game in the fourth quarter versus Indiana, which was the longest field goal in stadium history (dating back to 1938), tied for the longest by a Big Ten kicker this season and the fourth-longest field goal in Rutgers history. Davidovicz also led a kickoff unit that tied for the conference lead with a net of 41.6 yards, while also ranking eighth nationally with only 16.40 yards allowed per return.
Hampton, a team captain, tied for the Big Ten lead and ranked 11th nationally with 1.3 passes defended per game in 2018 with 13 pass breakups and three interceptions. The free safety also totaled 65 tackles, including a game-high 11 versus then-No. 4 Michigan, three tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery. In the game at Wisconsin, he became the first Scarlet Knight since 2012 with multiple interceptions in a contest.
Korsak helped Rutgers to its best net punt mark in school history at 40.1 yards in his first season playing football at any level. He averaged 42.7 yards on 78 attempts, which was third-best in a season in the RU record books, downed 23 inside the 20-yard line, forced 21 fair catches and recorded only three touchbacks. A total of 55-of-78 punts were not returned. The highlight of the season was a school-record 79-yard boot versus Northwestern, also tied for the third-longest punt in the nation this season, as one of 10 kicks of 50 or more yards.
Morris, also voted honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media last season, became the third Scarlet Knight all-time to register three seasons of 100 or more tackles (Tyronne Stowe, Steve Longa). He finished fourth in the league this year with 9.1 stops per game with 109 overall, 93 against the run, 12 in pass coverage, two on sacks, one covering a punt and one forcing a fumble. Morris is ranked ninth in program history with 335 career tackles, reaching double digits in 16 games, with a best of 19 in 2017 versus Michigan State, and leading or tying for the team high in stops 17 times. He ended with a career-high three pass breakups to go with an interception at Michigan State last Saturday.
Wharton collects the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for distinguishing himself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. A team captain, he started all 48 games of his career, the first Scarlet Knight to start every game on offense or defense since Courtney Greene (2005-08). The cornerback totaled 36 career passes defended with four interceptions, and made 205 tackles with 14.5 for loss.
The Big Ten will announce its offensive all-conference teams on Wednesday at 5 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
