Football Drops Road Contest to Wisconsin

Blackshear produces 100-yard receiving effort in loss

WISCONSIN 31 (6-3, 4-2), RUTGERS 17 (1-8, 0-6)
CAMP RANDALL STADIUM • MADISON, WIS.

MADISON, Wis. – Rutgers football (1-8, 0-6) returned to action after a bye week with a 31-17 loss at Wisconsin (6-3, 4-2) on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium. It was the third all-time meeting between the programs.

Offensively, freshman quarterback Artur Sitkowski finished 20-for-39 for 261 passing yards. Sophomore running back Raheem Blackshear had a team-high 162 receiving yards for the first 100-yard receiving game by a Scarlet Knight since Jawuan Harris in 2016 versus Indiana and first RU running back to reach the mark since Paul James against Howard in 2014. He had a five-yard receiving touchdown and a career-high 200 all-purpose yards. In addition, graduate student running back Jonathan Hilliman scored from one yard out for his 32nd career rushing touchdown in his 50th game overall.

Senior safety Saquan Hampton picked off two passes to help the Scarlet Knights establish a plus-two advantage in turnover margin. He became the first RU player to record two interceptions in a game since Brandon Jones at the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl and ended with four passes defended overall.

Senior linebacker Trevor Morris totaled 10 tackles to become the 11th player in program history to reach 300 career stops. Hampton and senior linebacker Deonte Roberts also had 10 stops on defense.

The Badgers drove 65 yards on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead. Hampton then made a leaping interception on the second drive. Next, Wisconsin drove 78 yards on 18 plays, but Rutgers held and forced a field goal that made it 10-0.

Hampton later jumped a route in RU territory for his second pick of the game, but the Badgers blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt to keep it 10-0 at the break.

After Wisconsin scored to open the second half, Rutgers answered with a 13-play, 71-yard drive over 6:25 that resulted in a 22-yard field goal by sophomore Justin Davidovicz. A season-long 40-yard passing play from Sitkowski to Blackshear put the Scarlet Knights in the red zone to setup the score.

However, the Badgers responded with a touchdown. The Scarlet Knights would reach the end zone in the fourth quarter on a one-yard rush by Hilliman, his team-leading sixth touchdown of the year. Blackshear hauled in a five-yard pass from Sitkowski for the final score.

Rutgers returns to HighPoint.com Stadium next Saturday to host No. 5 Michigan in a game presented by Horizon.
