No. 11/10 Terps Too Much For Women's Basketball

Scarlet Knights Fall 88-60 on Thursday Night in College Park

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Rutgers women's basketball team was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Terrapin squad as No. 11/10 Maryland downed the Scarlet Knights, 88-60, on Thursday night at the Xfinity Center.

The top 25 Terps shot a blistering 59 percent (32-of-54) from the field, including 83.3 percent (10-of-12) in the fourth quarter, to improve to 19-3 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play. Kaila Charles finished with a game-high 22 points in the win with teammate Eleanna Christinaki addeing in 20. 

Rutgers, who was led by junior guard Khadaizha Sanders with 12 points, fell to 17-7 overall and 5-5 in league play. The Scarlet Knights have been edged in their last four contest.

After Sanders opened the game's scoring, Maryland rattled off eight unanswered points and powered through with a 16-2 run to take control. The hot handed Terps connected on seven of its first eight shots from the field and led by as many as 15 in the first frame en-route to a 23-10 edge at the end of the contest's first 10 minutes

The game saw a more balanced attack in the second quarter and the Scarlet Knights were able to cut their deficit to single digits as a 3-pointer by Nigia Greene saw RU trail the Terps, 21-30. While Rutgers was able to outscore Maryland, 19-18, in the stanza, including a buzzer-beating shot from the top of the arc by Sanders, the Scarlet Knights were down 41-29 at the break.

Rutgers was outscoring the Terps in the third quarter, as Sanders drained a pair of attempts from the stripe with the Scarlet Knights trailing, 50-39, with 3:51 on the clock. From there, however, Maryland headed into the final frame on a 12-1  run and a 62-40 advantage.

Maryland continued to surge ahead in the fourth quarter, which included a 14-0 run for the Terps for their biggest lead of the night at 78-44 with 6:21 remaining.

The Rutgers women's basketball team returns to the RAC hardwood on Super Bowl Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting with No. 13/14 Michigan.

KNIGHT NOTES
- With the loss, Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer's career record falls to 994-396. She is six wins away from 1,000 career victories.
- With her season-low six points, Tyler Scaife now has 2,085 career points. She needs 127 more to move into second place on the all-time list past Cappie Pondexter (2002-2006).
- Khadaizha Sanders led RU in scoring for just the second time this season with her 12 points and has reached double figures in three of her last four games. Over the four game span, Sanders has averaged 9.8 points per game.
- Maryland was the first team Rutgers has allowed to surpass its scoring average in 2017-18. The Terps entered Thursday's game averaging 85.1 points and finished with 88. The Scarlet Knights had kept their previous 23 opponents below their scoring average.
