Shank earns highest score of the night on balance beam
AUBURN, Ala. – In front of a crowd of 5,143, Rutgers gymnastics continued its trend of increasing scores late by totaling a 194.225 Friday at No. 16 Auburn. The Tigers collected a 196.575 to take first, as it was the first matchup between the teams since 1998.
"I thought it was a great showing tonight," head coach Louis Levine said. "The team continues to work hard and get better every week. They went out and enjoyed every minute of competition, fighting for every tenths from beginning to end."
Starting on uneven bars, the Scarlet Knights posted a 48.250, with senior Makenzey Shank leading the way by earning a season-high 9.825. Junior Michelle Amoresano followed at 9.775, while sophomore Shannon Farrell brought in a 9.750.
The vault lineup took the stage next and added 48.375 in the second rotation. Three freshman highlighted the group, with Belle Huang impressing to a 9.775 and Sophia Atienza and Toni Williams each at 9.750.
Junior Jenna Rizkalla paced RU on floor exercise, tumbling to a 9.825. Huang also reached the 9.800 plateau by matching her best so far, as Shank contributed a 9.725. Freshman Hannah Prieto, who made her debut last week, rose up to a 9.725 and Williams picked up a 9.700. The rotation ended up as the best of the night at 48.775.
Finishing on balance beam, Shank earned the best score of the night for the Scarlet Knights with a 9.875 routine. Huang was next at 9.750 to round up her all-around to 38.925, her highest in four attempts. Sophomore Erin McLachlan also worked to a 9.750 to raise the beam number to 48.725.
Rutgers will return home to compete at the RAC for the first time this season next Saturday. The quad meet will start at 7 p.m. and include Towson, Ursinus and Western Michigan.
