Â
Purdue was led by Dominique Oden with a game-high 25 points. Karissa McLaughlin followed with 13 points while Ae'Rianna Harris rounded out the Boilermakers' double-figure scorers in the loss.
Out of the starting gates, Rutgers raced to a 6-0 lead in the game. After the Scarlet Knights held the Boilermakers scoreless for the first three minutes of the contest, Purdue's Oden rattled off six-straight points of her own to tie the score at the 5:25 mark. Carey stumped the surge, returning the early energy to Scarlet Knights for a 9-0 run to return the lead to Rutgers at 15-6 with less than a minute to go. The Boilermakers' Oden tacked a jumper at the end of the frame, setting the Scarlet Knight lead at 15-8 moving into the second quarter.
Although Rutgers and Purdue traded points to open the second frame, the Boilermakers poured in eight-straight points capped by a 3-pointer for McLaughlin to pull within one, 19-18, at the 5:42 mark. Scaife ended a three-minute scoreless drought with a jumper, igniting another back-and-forth battle as the Boilermakers balanced out the margin. A layup and "and one" for Purdue's McLaughlin at the 1:28 mark tied up the score at 26-26. Carey returned the lead to RU with a jumper before Purdue's Oden knocked in a shot from beyond the arc to put the Boilermakers in front, 29-28, for the first time.
Rutgers, however, entered the lockerroom on top as
Ciani Cryor closed the opening half with a layup to return the lead to the Scarlet Knights at 30-29 entering halftime.
The Scarlet Knights regained its momentum at the start of the third quarter, opening second half scoring with an 8-2 burst, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers for Scaife to extend the RU lead to 38-31 at the 7:31 mark. Scaife's second made basket from beyond the arc pushed her into second on the all-time scoring leaders list at Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights continued to grow its lead, using a 10-4 run to establish their largest advantage of the afternoon, 48-37, with 2:38 to go in the third frame. Rutgers added in six uncontested points before Purdue's Keys added a buzzer-beating jumper to set the Rutgers lead at 48-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
The teams again traded points throughout the start of the stanza as Rutgers held on to a 58-49 advantage at the 4:01 mark. Turnovers proved costly as Purdue was able to capitalize and countered with nine-straight points, including success at the free throw line, to tie up the score 58-58 with 1:50 remaining.
After a steal for junior guard
Khadaizha Sanders, Scaife knocked in a layup for a 60-58 RU lead with nearly a minute to go. Â
Purdue headed to the line on the next possession where Oden responded by connecting on two free throws to tie the score once again.
With four seconds on the clock, Scaife sunk the winning shot from the left inside of the arc to put RU back in front.
Purdue's Oden shot off a 3-pointer as time expired, but it missed the target and Rutgers secured the victory.
