Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 13 Men’s Lacrosse Stunned in Overtime at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 13 Rutgers men's lacrosse held a 14-10 lead in the fourth quarter, but was unable to finish it out, falling 15-14 in overtime to Princeton (3-2). Kieran Mullins led RU (4-2) with five goals and Jules Heningburg had two goals and four assists to tie Mullins for the team lead with six points.

Casey Rose added three goals, while Christian Mazzone had two. Max Edelmann made nine saves. Princeton held the advantage in shots (41-31), ground balls (39-31), and on faceoffs (19-14).

"We didn't execute down the stretch to win a rivalry game on the road," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Give Princeton a lot of credit. They are a good team. They are well coached with some talented players. We didn't play well enough to win."

The teams went back-and-forth in scoring in the opening quarter. Rutgers scored first as Heningburg fed Mullins for a finish. Princeton answered back a minute later. Christian Trasolini fired in a rocket for a 2-1 lead a minute after that, but the Tigers answered with a man-up goal.

Then it was Mazzone, slipping around a defender and bouncing one in. The Tigers scored their second man-up goal of the day to tie it at 3-3, then took their first lead of the day at 4-3. Heningburg had the final goal of the opening quarter, sniping one into the lower corner for a 4-4 tie after 15 minutes of action.

Princeton scored first in the second quarter, but RU answered with consecutive great plays in transition. After Garrett Bullet caused a turnover and started the break, Austin Divitcos found Tommy Coyne for the tally to tie the game at 5-5. Then off another transition chance, Mullins buried one to put RU ahead 6-5. Minutes later it was Mullins again, making it a hat trick to give Rutgers its first two-goal lead of the day at 7-5. Rose made it a four-goal run with a goal to make it 8-5 RU.

The Tigers got a goal with five minutes left in the opening half, their first tally in an eight-minute span. Mazzone answered with a diving goal, then Princeton tallied with just 13.8 seconds left in the first half. At halftime, Rutgers led 9-7.

The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter. Mullins put RU ahead 10-8 with an extra-man goal. The Tigers got the game even at 10-10, but Rutgers responded with three straight tallies to end the third stanza ahead 13-10. Heningburg, Rose and Mullins provided the tallies as RU lead by three goals after three frames.

In the fourth quarter, Rose completed his hat trick to put RU ahead 14-10 with 9:58 to go. With 8:03 on the clock, Princeton scored to snap a 17-minute scoring drought. From there, the Tigers finished with the last five goals of the game to take the win. Austin Sims scored with just 49 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, then tallied the game winner on Princeton's first offensive possession of overtime.

Rutgers will have two games next week. The team travels to Lehigh for a Wednesday night matchup first at 7 p.m., then will welcome No. 6 Syracuse Sunday at 1 p.m.
