Gotterup, Holuta, Whatley all record top-20 finishes to lead Scarlet Knights in Wilmington, North Carolina
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Battling adverse playing conditions the entire tournament, Rutgers men's golf closed out the Seahawk Intercollegiate in seventh place on Monday in Wilmington, North Carolina. Three Scarlet Knights – senior Matt Holuta and freshmen Oliver Whatley and Christopher Gotterup – tied for 18th to lead RU during the 54-hole tournament, played on the Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall.
With cold and windy conditions present throughout play on Sunday and Monday, Rutgers still fought to record the third-lowest team total in the second round on Sunday afternoon. During that round, Gotterup contributed a two-under-par 70, while Holuta and Whatley each shot one-under-par 71's
Host UNC Wilmington secured the team title with a two-under-par 862 (289-279-294), while Campbell (874: 291-285-298) and Michigan State (279: 283-292-304) rounded out the top-three team totals.
"We faced challenging conditions with lower temperatures and strong wind gusts, so I'm proud of how the guys responded later on," said head coach Rob Shutte. "We created energy in that second round and tried to hit the ground running this morning for round three, but the scores all up and down the field reflected the tough playing conditions. Our young guys played well, so there are definitely positives to take out of this tournament as we prepare for Penn State's tournament next month."
Gotterup carded a one-over-par 73 for the lowest third round for a Scarlet Knight, as the rookie fired off birdies on holes three, 10 and 16 to go along with 12 pars. Gotterup, who also produced a two-under-par 70 in the second round on Sunday afternoon, finished the two-day invite with 10 birdies.
Whatley ended Monday with a four-over-par 76, also tying for 18th with Gotterup and Holuta. The freshman had birdies on holes six, eight, 13 and 16 and finished the tournament with 13 birdies to lead RU in that category. Whatley also had a strong second round on Sunday after he shot a one-under-par 71 with six birdies, including four consecutive on holes five through eight.
Holuta also carded a four-over-par 76 with birdies on holes one and 16 to tie for 18th. Senior co-captain Toks Pedro added a two-over-par 74 with two birdies and nine pars in the final round to tie for 34th, while sophomore Adam Gray rounded out the team scorecard tied for 75th.
As an individual, senior Jack Panagos tied for 71st.
Rutgers returns to action from April 14-15 at the Rutherford, hosted by Penn State, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
