Gotterup finishes tied for 14th to lead Scarlet Knights in University Park
University Park, Pa. – Freshman Christopher Gotterup finished tied for 14th while senior Jack Panagos and freshman Oliver Whatley both carded one-over-par 72's in the final round to wrap up action at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State, on Sunday in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Battling wet conditions to go along with 20 mile-per-hour wind gusts during the final 18 holes, the Scarlet Knights finished eighth as a team with a three-round total of 880 (294-290-296). The host Nittany Lions captured the team title, while West Virginia and Oakland placed second and third, respectively.
Panagos and Whatley closed out the tournament with strong final rounds, as both recorded the third-lowest individual scores of the third round to finish tied for 25th in the field. RU was without senior co-captain Matt Holuta and sophomore Tony Jiang, who were both out due to injury.
"There were a lot of positives and learning experiences to take out of this tournament," said head coach Rob Shutte. "There were opportunities for us in day one and we got better in round two which was good to see. Sunday's conditions were tough, but it was good to see Jack [Panagos] and the two freshmen in the lineup able to lead us this weekend."
Gotterup finished with a five-over-par 76 in the final round after he carded back-to-back 70's in rounds one and two on Saturday. Senior Toks Pedro (T/50th) and junior Matthew Mourin (68th) rounded out the team total for RU.
Competing as an individual, rookie Putt Sridama finished tied for 46th, which included back-to-back 72's during play on Saturday.
Rutgers returns to action from April 21-22 at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
