Wildcats score seven in the seventh for the series sweep

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 22, 2018) – Rutgers softball (17-26, 2-12) suffered a series sweep at the hands of Northwestern (29-13, 11-5) after the Wildcats scored seven runs in the seventh inning to come all the way back and claim an 8-7 victory on Sunday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.

Sophomore right fielder Nicole Bowman led the Scarlet Knights to a 7-1 lead with a pair of solo home runs, an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to account for a career-high tying four RBIs. It marked the third time this season Bowman drove in four runs in a single game. She is also the first Scarlet Knight to hit two home runs in a game since Sierra Maddox did it against Indiana on March 25, 2017.

Bowman's bombs came on back-to-back plate appearances in the fifth and sixth innings to run her season RBI total to 26, good for second on the team. Career homer No. 8 cleared the right field fence by a large margin, then she launched No. 9 to dead center on the first pitch of the sixth inning.

Maddox ripped an RBI double to left center field in the two-run first inning, and freshman Madyson Cole hit a clutch, two-out, pinch-hit, two-run single to give RU a 6-1 lead in the fifth.

Junior starting pitcher Whitney Jones did not surrender an RBI in her five innings, giving up a run on a wild pitch and allowed five hits and three walks with three strikeouts while taking the no-decision.

Sophomore left fielder Hailey Hoklotubbe extender her reached base safely streak to 13 straight games, while also hitting in her sixth straight game. The sophomore went 1-for-5 with a run scored on Sunday, joining junior Jess Hughes and freshman Erin Collins in the hit column.

The Scarlet Knights return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 25 at LIU Brooklyn for a mid-week non-conference clash set for 5:30 p.m.
