COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Rutgers men's lacrosse (9-5, 2-3 Big Ten) dropped its Big Ten regular season finale, falling 10-7 to No. 19 Ohio State (8-6, 3-2 Big Ten).
Jules Heningburg led RU with four points on the day (two goals, two assists).
Christian Mazzone added two goals, while
Kieran Mullins,
Casey Rose and
Tommy Coyne also scored.
Ohio State got the first two goals of the game, taking a 2-0 lead after just four minutes. Rose answered back with by rocketing in a goal halfway through the first quarter, and that score held after 15 minutes of action.
OSU went back up by two goals, taking a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter. But halfway through the frame,
Kyle Pless started a spark with a caused turnover, and RU pushed in transition, leading to a
Tommy Coyne goal.
OSU scored next, but Rutgers answered, as in a possession with the shot clock on, Heningburg fed Mazzone at the doorstep for the finish. The game went into the intermission with the home team leading 4-3.
In the second half, OSU scored first on a man-up, then tallied three more for an 8-3 lead. Mazzone snapped the scoring drought with his second goal of the day, making it 8-4. That score held through three quarters of action.
RU scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with Mullins finishing a feed from
Ryan Gallagher to cut the lead to 8-5. OSU answered back with two goals in the next two minutes to take a 10-5 lead.
Rutgers got the next goal off of transition, with Heningburg scoring his first of the day Heningburg had one more tally, but that was all in a 10-7 final
Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a trip to the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The team will play Maryland in Thursday's semifinals, which will be broadcast live nationwide on Big Ten Network.
