Correnti, DeLuca place at U.S. Open

LAS VEGAS (April 29, 2018) – Matthew Correnti finished fourth at 97kg in the UWW Junior Nationals division to highlight action for Rutgers wrestling at the 2018 Marine Corps U.S. Open Wrestling Championships this weekend in Las Vegas. Former Scarlet Knight Eleazar DeLuca also placed during action, finishing seventh at 72kg in the Senior Greco Roman division. Both Correnti and Deluca qualified for the World Team Trials, held next month in Rochester, Minnesota.
Correnti used three consecutive wins to reach the semifinals of his bracket, pinning Brayden Ray (Unattached) in the first round and collecting back-to-back technical victories over Tanner Zagarino (Pittsburgh Wrestling Club) and John Jakobsen (Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club) in his first three matches.
Correnti dropped his semifinal bout with Daniel Kerkvliet (Pinnacle Minnesota), a Cadet World Champion, before defeating Pan American gold medalist Hunter DeJong (MWC Wrestling Academy) to secure his spot in the consolation finals. Correnti then dropped his match with Quinn Miller (Cavalier Wrestling Club), 7-0 to secure his fourth-place result.
DeLuca went 3-2 in the 72kg Senior Greco Roman bracket, which included a 8-0 VSU win over David Prado (NMU-OTS) to place seventh in his weight class. DeLuca also picked up a win over Robert Zyko (U.S. Army) by VSU, 9-0, in the championship bracket and a 6-5 decision over Bobby Yamashita (All Navy Wrestling).
In his return to the mat, Anthony Ashnault finished 2-2 in the Senior Men's Freestyle bracket at 65kg. After a first-round loss to Nicholas Dardanes (TMWC), Ashnault picked up back-to-back wins over Dylan Thurston (IRTC) and Freddy Eckles (Bulls Wrestling Club). Ashnault then lost to three-time NCAA Champion Logan Stieber to bow out of the tournament.
Joseph Grello collected wins over Donald Negus (Colorado Mesa Wrestling Club) and Bryan McLaughlin (Pennsylvania RTC) in the UWW Junior 79kg championship bracket, finishing 2-2 during weekend action. Alex Esposito picked up a win at 125kg, while incoming freshman Malcolm Robinson rattled off three wins at 61kg to finish 3-2 at the tournament.
