Nicole Bowman blasts home run No. 4 of the season for Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 8, 2018) – Rutgers softball (17-19, 2-4 B1G) dropped the third game of a Big Ten series with No. 23/24 Ohio State, 10-3, on Sunday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex. The Buckeyes (24-8, 5-4) sweep the series and have now won 11 straight over the Scarlet Knights.
Sophomore right fielder Nicole Bowman smashed a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, in the fifth inning to bring the score to 7-3 in favor of Ohio State, who scored its first six runs of the game via the home run. Senior first baseman Rebecca Hall got Rutgers on the board in the third with her 10th double of the season.
That RBI was the 134th of her career, which moves her into a third place tie all-time at Rutgers with Brittney Lindley (2009-12). The double gave her sole possession of third place in career two-baggers at RU with 45 as she sits seven away from setting a new school record.
Junior shortstop Jess Hughes did not record an official at-bat on Sunday despite playing all seven innings due to three walks and a hit by pitch at the plate. Therefore, her 16-game hit streak is intact heading into the Michigan series next weekend. Hughes also played perfect defense with five putouts and two assists on Sunday.
Hughes is chasing to tie the longest hit streak in the Big Ten this season at 17 games, which was set by Michigan's Faith Canfield.
Senior catcher Sierra Maddox and freshman designated player Erin Collins added hits for the Scarlet Knights, while sophomore left fielder Hailey Hoklotubbe extended her reached-base safely streak to six straight games with a walk in the sixth inning.
Rutgers travels to Michigan, currently ranked No. 17/16 in the nation, for a Big Ten series April 13-15 in Ann Arbor. Friday's opener is set to begin at 6 p.m. ET. Sunday's finale at 1 p.m. ET will air on ESPNU.
