Oniesha Clarkes Reaches 100m Finals With Third Fastest Time in Rutgers History
BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The Rutgers women's track and field team closed out the 2018 Outdoor Big Ten Championships with fifth-year Bryanna Grant setting a new triple jump record and junior Oniesha Clarke qualifying for the 100m finals with the third fastest time in the RU record books in the preliminaries.
After being one of the top nine out of the preliminaries of Sunday's triple jump, Grant bested her outdoor mark for a fifth time this season setting a new Rutgers outdoor benchmark of 12.80m (42' 0") on her final takeoff to take fifth place. She resets the previous record of 12.57m (41' 3") captured by Kahimah Liverman at the Metropolitan Championships back on April 21, 2007 at Rutgers' home track.
Clarke, meanwhile, reached the 100m finals with a new PR of 11.59 during Saturday's preliminaries, which marked the third fastest time in the event in the Scarlet Knight logs. She raced her way to the finish line in 11.66 in Sunday's final to finish in seventh. It was the junior Scarlet Knight's second Big Ten Championship finals appearances after placing fourth in the 60m at the indoor championship in March.
Rutgers finished the 2018 outdoor championship 13th overall, while Minnesota won this year's crown followed by Purdue in second and Iowa in third.
Up next, the Scarlet Knights will be waiting to see which members of the squad will qualify for the NCAA East Regional being held in Tampa, Florida on May 24-26.
