PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse goalkeeper Max Edelmann will return for the 2019 season. Edelmann was granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA and will be a redshirt senior next season.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to come back to Rutgers for one more season of lacrosse and to be able to pursue my Master's degree," Edelmann said. "It was an easy decision for me to come back to The Banks after the past few years considering the success we've had under Coach Brecht and the culture we've created here."
Edelmann has started 32 games between the pipes in a Scarlet Knights uniform. He holds a 9.27 goals-against-average and .516 save percentage. Boasting a 22-10 record, he has made 316 career saves, while collecting 51 ground balls and causing eight turnovers.
Last season, Edelmann was a Big Ten Preseason Honoree and validated that title with a performance among the league's best goalkeepers. He posted nine games with double-digit saves. As the season got deeper, he really excelled, making at least 10 saves in seven of the final eight games of the year. His performance was key in a number of wins, especially in Big Ten play. He had 14 saves versus Michigan, not allowing a goal in the first half, and was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week. Then he posted 11 clutch saves in an 11-8 win over No. 11 Penn State, including seven in the second half.
A native of Middletown, Md., Edelmann is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. A double major in Labor Studies and Employment Relations and Criminal Justice, he posted a 3.7 GPA as a spring graduate. He was also named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2017.
"Max has been not just one of our better players, but one of our better students," head coach Brian Brecht said. "He's a great ambassador that we have representing Rutgers lacrosse."
In 2017 he was named Second Team All-Big Ten. He started all 14 games, notching a 10-4 record with 143 saves, and holding an 8.91 goals-against-average and .532 save percentage. Edelmann started the first three games of the 2016 season before missing the rest of the year with an injury.
Edelmann has played in three seasons 'On the Banks' following two seasons of junior college at Community College of Baltimore County. However, he played in just one season at CCBC Essex, which in addition to his injury in 2016 allowed him to be granted a waiver under new hardship legislation.
"Although we came up short last year, I've seen that we have a talented class coming in for the 2019 season as well as a handful of returning players that are going to be great leaders for this program," Edelmann said. "I'm confident in our coaches and the guys we have in our locker room that we will continue to build upon the foundation that has been set since the 2016 season. I am extremely grateful for the support of Rutgers Athletics over the past three years and would like to thank them for the incredible opportunity to come back to further my education and continue my lacrosse career."
Rutgers is coming off a 9-6 season in 2018. Along with Edelmann, RU will return five starters in starting defenseman Garrett Bullett, starting midfielders Casey Rose and Ryan Gallagher and starting attackmen Kieran Mullins and Tommy Coyne. Also, the team brings back its top two long-stick midfielders in Kyle Pless and Garrett Michaeli, along with top short-stick midfielder Mark Christiano. Adam Charalambides, the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is set to return in 2019 as well.
