Rutgers graduate will compete Aug. 13-19 in Pebble Beach, California
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers men's golfer Erick Morales qualified for the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship, held from Aug. 13-19 in Pebble Beach, California. The 2006 RU graduate finished at three under with scores of 71 and 70 to secure the Puerto Rico Golf Association title on Tuesday, July 10 in San Juan.
The leading annual golf tournament in the United States for amateur golfers, the event is organized by the USGA. Fans can follow Morales and the rest of the field on FOX Sports 1 from Aug. 15-17 and on FOX on Aug. 18-19.
With Monday play canceled due to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl, 36 holes were contested on Tuesday with play concluding in near darkness. Morales entered the final hole of the second round tied with Juan Guerra for the lead. Morales made par on the 18th hole, while Guerra missed a six-foot putt that would have forced a playoff, securing the win for Morales. Morales finished his final 18 holes with a two-under-par 70, which included five birdies and 10 pars. In the first round, Morales carded a one-under-par 71 courtesy of three birdies and 13 pars.
Morales is a veteran in international competition, as he appeared on the PGA Tour at the 2015 Puerto Rico Open. Morales also participated in the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship for Puerto Rico, the 2011 Puerto Rico Open, and was the highest-ranked amateur in Puerto Rico in 2012.
Morales competed for the Scarlet Knights from 2003-06 under head coach Maura Waters Ballard. Morales helped RU to a third-place team finish in the BIG EAST Championships and an appearance at the 2005 NCAA East Regional.
