Beyond Basketball: NBA Office Visit
Jul 31 | Women's Basketball
While many may think that playing basketball for head coach C. Vivian Stringer might be all x's and o's, trying to perfect the 55 defense and endless preparation for the Scarlet Knights' tough schedules year-in and year-out, the staff ensures that its student-athletes are just as prepared to meet the demands of the real world.
In mid-July, in conjunction with the Rutgers Leadership Academy (RLA), the team had the opportunity to visit the NBA headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey and meet several members of the league's staff that is not only responsible for all aspects of the premier men's professional basketball league in the world, but also oversees operations of the WNBA, television production and more.
However, before embarking on the adventure, the team got some advice on how to put their best feet forward to not only represent the State University of New Jersey, but also to learn how to further position themselves for life outside of Rutgers and the hardwood.
While many of the stats and results of the Scarlet Knights from the court speak for themselves on paper, the lesson gave the members of the squad the ability to gain confidence in being able to introduce themselves and talk a little bit more about their potential goals for the future. The skills introduced prepared the Scarlet Knights for not only a visit with NBA staff and executives, but for occasions such as networking events and job interviews as well.
Ready to put practice into action, the Scarlet Knights got a first-hand look at the day-to-day operations of the league office, learned about the behind the scenes action of game day and the different opportunities to be a part of basketball besides just playing the game.

"I think Rutgers prepares you so you aren't shocked for life after basketball," said redshirt senior forward and All-Big Ten honorable mention selection Stasha Carey. "Since we spend some much time with basketball, it's great to have opportunities to see different fields that you might have an interest in pursuing."
"I give Rutgers a lot of credit," said graduate transfer Charise Wilson, who is just one year away from wrapping up her eligibility. "It's scary to look beyond college and going into the real world, but Rutgers has brought us to different events and different things like WNBA games and visiting the NBA house. Even off the court, there are so many things we learn from Coach Stringer and the rest of the coaching staff, but right now I am leaning toward what's next in my life. They're giving me different ideas and strategies to bring what we learned here at Rutgers and off the court whether that would be to the professional level, just getting a job or even earning another degree and that's why I'm thankful."
