Long-time wrestling director of operations was three-time national qualifier for Scarlet Knights
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Christian Brother's Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, has named Rutgers wrestling director of operations Billy Ashnault as its head coach, announced on Friday. Ashnault, who has been with the program for the past six seasons, will take over a CBA program that has won three straight NJSIAA district titles from 2014 to 2016, captured the 2016 Shore Conference Team Championship and had an individual state champion in 2016.
"From competing as a student-athlete to working alongside the great people here, my time at Rutgers has been awesome," Ashnault said. "I'm very grateful to have been able to learn from so many influential people here over the years. I can't thank the Rutgers wrestling staff enough. This place will always be a family to me."
"Billy is going to make for a phenomenal wrestling coach," said head coach Scott Goodale. "He is passionate about the sport and CBA made a game-changing hire. He has been my right-hand man for six years from an operational standpoint, so I see day in and day out the relationships he builds and the athletes he has impacted. This is just the start for what could be an incredible career for him."
As the Scarlet Knight director of operations, Ashnault coordinated the day-to-day operations of the wrestling program along with the rest of the RU coaching staff. His duties included organization of team travel, orientation of incoming classes, coordination of practice and lifting plans, helping in alumni and supporter outreach and directing RU's summer camps.
With Ashnault's assistance, Rutgers has become one of the top collegiate programs in the country. The Scarlet Knights have produced eight All-Americans in the past five seasons and produced the best team finish in program history at the 2018 NCAA Championships in Cleveland. Six Scarlet Knights combined for 19 victories and 42.5 team points en route to an 11th-place result at nationals in 2018.
A three-time national qualifier during his collegiate career, Ashnault wrestled to an 86-6 record, including two seasons of 25-plus wins as a Scarlet Knight. Ashnault's brother, Anthony Ashnault, received a sixth year of eligibility for the 2018-19 season from the NCAA and is the only three-time All-American in program history.
