NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Former Rutgers rower Onyeka Oguagha won the bronze medal at the World University Championships in Shanghai, China on Sunday, Aug. 12.
Oguagha, who was a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten honoree and letterwinner, rowed the women's eight for Team USA at the World University Championships. The U.S. finished third in 6:22.32 behind first-place Great Britain and Canada in second.
Sunday's performance marked the second medal on the international stage this summer for a Rutgers rower as Sarah Johanek, a rising senior, won gold in the coxed four at the Under 23 Championship in July. Johanek capped off a standout junior season in which she earned her second-straight First Team All-Big Ten honors.
Rutgers has enjoyed a history of success in international competition, including two-time Olympian Jennifer Dore-Terhaar (RC '93) who competed at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and Maite Urtasun (RC '01) who was an Olympian in 2004.
