PISCATAWAY – Rutgers women's golf will compete against the nation's best during a fall schedule that features five tournaments. Recognized third last month among the top 10 academic programs in all of Division I, the Scarlet Knights return six letterwinners under head coach Kari Williams.
Graduate student Ashleigh Greenham and junior Ana Cortes will serve as team captains for Rutgers, which welcomes freshman Maeve Rossi from Milan, Italy. Also returning to the links for RU is senior Astrid Aneman, junior Carrie-Ann Lee and sophomores Harriet Allsebrook and Lori Char.
Four of the five fall tournaments will be hosted by Power 5 Conference teams, including three Big Ten programs.
The Scarlet Knights begin the season as first time competitors in their initial two events. Rutgers opens at the Minnesota Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club, Sept. 10-11, before travellng to Michigan State for the Mary Fossum Invitational, Sept. 15-16. The tournament will be played at Forest Akers West Golf Course, site of 2019 NCAA East Regional.
After a fifth place finish with an 894 (298-301-295) at the 14-team Nittany Lion Invitational last season, Rutgers returns to the Penn State Blue Course Sept. 22-23. Char, who improved her score every round and was as minus one on par fives with nine birdies to tie for 15th in the 85-player field last year, will seek another strong performance.
The Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at Sahalee Country Club, welcomes the Scarlet Knights in October (9-10). Rutgers placed seventh with a 616 (305-311-303) total at the event last season. Allsebrook carded a final round 72 en route to a 26th place finish with a 229 (79-78-72) on the course, which is consistently ranked among the top 100 in America by Golf Digest.
Rutgers concludes its fall campaign at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware at Rehoboth Country Club, Oct. 20-21. In the fall of 2016, Greenham tied for 2nd at the event, carding a 228 (80-73-75) with 33 pars and six birdies, to help RU to a fifth place finish.
Last season, the Scarlet Knights ranked 115th in the nation with a 304.88 scoring average to establish a new program record. Women's golf also earned the Top Team Grade Point Average at the RAwards for the third consecutive year and received the Rutgers Leadership Academy (RLA) Team Cup Award for its efforts in the community.
