WOODBURY, Minn. - Rutgers women's golf is 13th with a 597 (297-300) total after the first two rounds of the Golden Gopher Invitational, played Monday at Prestwick Golf Club. Three Scarlet Knights enter Tuesday's final round among the top 45 in the highly competitive, 84-player field.
RU was even on par five holes with 114 pars and 18 birdies on the par 72, 6,479-yard course to officially begin its 2018-19 season under head coach Kari Williams.
Junior Carrie-Ann Lee paced Rutgers on day one, carding a 148 (75-73). She was minus two on par five holes with six birdies competing in third position.
"After a slow start in the morning, I found confidence in my long game through the afternoon," said Lee. "I left a few shots out there today, but I am excited to get back on the course tomorrow."
Graduate student Ashleigh Greenham (73-76) and rookie Maeve Rossi (74-75), competing in her initial collegiate event, also had strong efforts and are tied for 45th with 149 totals. Greenham was plus one on both par threes and par fives with four pars. Rossi, playing in first position as a true freshman, was minus one on par fives with five birdies. Both tallied 23 pars on day one.
"I started the morning with some nerves, but was able to get my game back on track after a few holes," said Rossi. "I hope to give myself better opportunities tomorrow over the final 18 holes."
Junior Ana Cortes and senior Astrid Aneman complete the team scorecard. Cortes is tied for 58th with a 151 (75-76) and Aneman is tied for 74th with a 157 (79-78).
San Jose State leads the field with a seven-under 569 (282-287), one stroke ahead of second place East Carolina. Virginia Tech is in the show position with 573, four strokes off the pace. SJSU's Natasha Andrea Oon and North Texas' Lauren Cox are tied atop the individual leaderboard with seven-under par 137 efforts.
The Scarlet Knights, who are five strokes behind 11th place Kansas and ahead of both South Dakota State and host Minnesota, begins their final round at 9:15 a.m. (CT) Tuesday. Live results are available via Golfstat.
