Postgame Quotes: Football vs. Buffalo

Rutgers Head Coach: Chris Ash
CHRIS ASH: Just want to give all the credit to Buffalo. They did a great job. Had their team prepared and made plays when they needed to make plays, and my hat's off to Lance and his staff and their football team, and they are off to a good start. He's done a good job.

You know, we've got to stop making mistakes and beat ourselves. Every time we're close to getting something going, there's something that stops us, whether it's a mental error, it's a penalty, something foolish stops our football team and we've got to get that fixed, somehow, some way.

Love our guys, really, really appreciate how they came out in the second half after a poor first half. They came out, played hard, fought, felt like we had opportunities when we were down 35-13, got down in the red zone and if we score there, you never know what happens, there's still plenty of time to go in the game and didn't work out. Didn't make the plays that we needed to and you know, the rest is, what it is the rest of the game.

With that, I'll just go ahead and open it up to questions.

Q. Where do you go as a program?
CHRIS ASH: Just keep working. I mean, that's it. The process can be a painful one. It can be one that's not a lot of fun. It's not where any of us wanted to be at this moment. It is where we're at and we've just got to keep going back to work. We've got a lot of young players that have been playing out there. We've got to get them better. Been saying that every week but that's what we've got to do. Starts, again, with myself. I've got to find a better way to coach. Got to find a better way to lead the team and lead the staff and get our preparation on game day because when you have the penalties we had, the mental errors we had, you can't do it on games.

Q. What's the decision to change quarterbacks?
CHRIS ASH: Just needed something different. Art didn't necessarily do anything wrong in the game. There wasn't much happening on offense and felt like we needed something different and gave a senior captain an opportunity to see if he could go spark the offense.

Q. You had some success in the second half; will you stick with him next week?
CHRIS ASH: That's to be determined. We have to go back and watch the tape and look at what we can do. Art's done a lot of really good things. But the people around him also have to do really good things, and we'll evaluate that position and what we're doing around him again and make the decision on what we think is the best interests of the football team. Again, Art did some good things, made some mistakes, but everybody else did, too.

Q. What do you say to the fans --
CHRIS ASH: I understand the frustration. I've been in this long enough to understand the frustration. Again, I feel really good about our future with our team. We've got a lot of young players, and by no means is that a disrespect to our older players. We've got a bunch of really good older players, too, senior captains that absolutely love and have fought their tails off for this program, this university. We'll keep working and do everything we can to keep getting better.

Q. What's your message to the team?
CHRIS ASH: You know, same thing. It's not where we wanted to be. It's where we're at. We've just got to keep working. Again, there's no magic formula guys, you've just got to keep working, got to keep practicing and somehow do it better and again, it's a process and it's a painful one right now. Nobody wanted to be here at this spot, and we are, so we've got to deal with it.

Q. Your team is very good defensively last year. Are you disappointed in the number of big plays you're giving up?
CHRIS ASH: Absolutely. We can't give up the big explosive plays that we have, especially in the last couple weeks. You know, we've got good players. I think we've got a good plan, good system. Again, just like I talk about on offense, mental errors and mistakes, penalties kill you, and that's what's happened on defense at times and we've got to find a way to coach it better and we've got to kind a way to get our preparation carried over to game day and you can't give up explosive plays on defense and expect to win football games.

Q. You said you liked the preparation going into these games the next couple weeks. Are there things that you need to do differently on game day, maybe take more ownership of the offense? What can you do differently on a game day?
CHRIS ASH: I can tell you I'm not going to start calling plays. That's not my strength. That's not what I've ever done in my career. And that would be a mistake. I've got nothing but 100 percent trust and faith in John. John is a coach that's coached a lot of football at the highest level, knows how to structure an offense and develop players and you will can a plays and there's steer oh good that would come out of me trying to call offensive plays or get involved in that.

Q. What about defensive plays?
CHRIS ASH: I'll evaluate where we're at defensively. That's my background. I'll evaluate what we need to do to try to get better.

Rutgers Player Quotes

Rutgers Quarterback Giovanni Rescigno
On going into the game during the first half: "I'm not really surprised. I'm in the game, I'm involved with the game. So, I'm ready to go at all times. I try to keep myself warm so when those situations do come up, I'm ready to come in. I wasn't necessarily surprised, just ready to go."

On getting in a rhythm: "It takes a few plays, maybe a series or two to get into a rhythm, but I think I settled into the game. I wish we could have left with the win or made it close, but I'm proud of the guys and the way they fought. They fought really hard and I'm really proud of them for that. We're going to keep moving forward."

On remaining optimistic: "It's tough and it's frustrating, absolutely. But we have a really strong locker room. We have built a strong relationship with all of the guys. We believe in the coaches and I think at the end of the day we're going to be alright because we have a strong locker room and we're really close."

Rutgers Quarterback Artur Sitkowski
On how to respond after this game: "We just have to get back to work. We have a good team coming here next week and we have to work hard. We'll start tomorrow with practice. We just have to keep moving forward. We'll learn from this and keep moving forward."

On the last three weeks: "There's been some ups and downs, but you have to keep a level head. This is big-time college ball, so you have to stay level headed and trust the process. We have to work hard every day."

On what the team needs to improve on: "We have to convert third downs. That's what it comes down to, no matter what. It comes down to executing at all positions – quarterback, the line, so we just have to execute third downs."

Rutgers Kicker Justin Davidovicz
On his role: "I'm just trying to do my job for the team. In practice we work live game reps, so we're constantly having a live rush at us. I'm just trying to put the ball through the uprights and do my job for the team."

On being a strength for the team: "I don't think there is any more pressure added, I just want to be able to do my job the best I can to help my team out and give us the best chance to win."

On the team's morale: "Obviously we're frustrated at the moment, but we just have to go back to work tomorrow. We had a good week of practice, we just need to go execute out on game day."
Buffalo Head Coach Lance Leipold
On slow start of QB Tyree Jackson (0-of-3, 1 interception to start the game): "No, because all three were catchable balls that should have been caught and the guys will say that, I mean unfortunately George (Rushing) made one or two of those and one went through A.J. and they intercepted so it was not the start we wanted but those throws where we they needed to be. This team with that kind of start, we dropped the opening kickoff, we do a lot of things that make it look like we are not ready to go yet per se in a Big Ten stadium and I was really proud that our defense was able to hold to field goals get stops after the interception and then rebound back and played an extremely good half of football."

On WR Anthony Johnson's big plays: "They were huge, we were waiting for one of those big throws down the field, for him to get behind somebody, he really had not done that this year, some were broken plays but for him to show the big play receiver he is, says a lot and then we were able to rush in the second half."

On injury updates about WR Anthony Johnson and CB Cameron Lewis: "Both of those guys were cleared to go back in if needed but with the score where it was, we did not feel it was necessary."

On being 4-0 for the first time since 1981: "I guess since we were not here at that point, it is nice to see that the work that these guys have done and the tough times that the upperclassmen have been through, to see them start having it pay off for them. We have a long way to go this season but proud of where they are and a huge challenge at home next week against Army."

On RB Jaret Patterson being the effective running back: "He has got great balance and quickness and there is a different time for different back some time and he was able to make, without watching all the film yet and how he was blocked, but he made some plays and saw some creases and then of course made it happen."

On DE Chuck Harris's sack bringing back momentum: "It kept it at three score plus, it was a point where it was going to be like okay this is get within two scores and there is still a lot of time on the clock and you are right, we had lost a little bit of the rhythm, probably got conservative and Chuck comes up with the big play on fourth down."

Buffalo Player Quotes

Buffalo Wide Receiver Anthony Johnson

On the passing game finding a rhythm: "I felt that we just had to stick to our routine, keep pushing the ball and let the plays come to us. Some didn't go our way early but then we just moved on to the next when. Once it finally starting clicking it just took off from there."

On his touchdown catches: "That was a big momentum shift. That first big catch for the touchdown got the offense going pretty well. It got the guys excited and pumped up and we were ready to take it on from there."

On QB Tyree Jackson: "Tyree is an outstanding quarterback. He's always going to make big plays for us and get the ball to us. He's always going to do his job and help us out. We expect big things from him every game."

On the season overall: "It's great. But we just are going to keep working, week by week and game by game. We're not going to take anybody for granted, just keep coming out and working hard."

Buffalo QB Tyree Jackson
On the team's start: "We knew that anything that happened in the beginning was a reflection of us. We were self-inflicting wounds on ourselves. But we just continued to push through. We knew what kind of offense we are and we just fought through that."

On WR Anthony Johnson: "Anthony is a great player. He's always making plays, that's just what he does. To have a guy like that on your team is definitely a blessing and it just sparks the offense with big plays. He's going to continue to make plays for us."

On the offense: "The offensive line is playing great, still no sacks in four games, which is just unbelievable. The receivers we have make great plays. That makes it an easy job for me."

On RB Jaret Patterson: "He's worked hard ever since he stepped foot in our program. We all knew that big game was coming from him. He's been showing that all spring, all summer. He's an unbelievable player. It's great to see that because he's a great player and great person."

Buffalo RB Jaret Patterson
On making the most of his opportunities: "I just read my primary and secondary reads and just took advantage of the open holes the offensive line made for me."

On his 100-yard rushing game: "It felt really good. But I can't really dwell on it too much because we just have to get back to work and prepare for our next game against Army."

On the season overall: "It's huge. It's been a long time since we've had a start like this. With what this program has been through, it's great. Words can't describe how I feel right now, I'm just so happy to be part of this special thing that's happening at the University of Buffalo."
